Hi Demi Picasso Analysis
Hi Demi,
I definitely agree with you on how two artists convey the emptiness in their art work. I feel like emptiness in Dali's painting is more emphasized by the unfilled spaces, while Orozco uses skeleton as the figures representing privileged and empowered part of society. I found both of those devices very powerful, and they both had a striking impact on me.

As you enter the Great Stair Hall, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you are met with a view of a statue that stands fourteen feet tall. Made of gilded copper, this large statue is Diana by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It depicts the nude goddess Diana; balanced on one foot atop of a gold ball, with poise and grace drawing back her bow and arrow in preparation for release. Due to its size, color, and placement this piece is the focal point in the room. Directly across from the statue suspended above the open space and staircase below is Alexander Calder’s Ghost. This sculpture is not well lit and the area on the second floor in which is hangs is an almost empty space that doesn’t have other gallery entrances near it and almost feels closed off. Hung from the ceiling, Ghost is a thirty-four foot tall mobile comprised of numerous metal rods and painted sheets of metal. The sheet metal was cut to shapes that bring to mind the image of flying birds or falling leaves and other forms found in nature.…

Picasso and Braque were the first artist to depict cubism style. Art pieces placed in the Analytic Cubism movement often demonstrate the use of overlapping geographic facets to depict images of neutral subject matters, such as still life or portraits. The use of harsh edges and straight lines was something hardly used in previous art movements, making cubism the path runner for modern art movements…

When looking at Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before a Mirror”, one can obviously make out a girl observing herself in front of a mirror. The woman is portrayed one way before the mirror and another way in her reflection. Picasso is obviously sending a message behind the meaning of his work. He also, more than likely, has a reason and story behind why he rendered the work of art. This message and story become useless when it is reproduced onto a computer screen, according to John Berger. In his Ways of Seeing, Berger explains how technology accompanied by today’s world has somewhat tainted the worth and overall beauty of experiencing art. One no longer has the ability to remove him or herself from reality or as Clive Bell would say, have an “aesthetic…
