Communication and Crisis
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) has begun to receive official reports stating that the public water supplies of several towns in the South East Texas (SET) area have become contaminated with life-threatening biological agents. As director of this office, it is my responsibility to address contingency plans within the organization and the public; without creating panic. Areas of focus will include external and internal communication channels, communication advantages and challenges, communication strategies, applicable technology, technology utilization, and media opportunities.

This gives our organization a major advantage. We have the ability to spread and collect information quickly and on a grand scale. Information needs to be disseminated as fast and efficiently as possible. The challenges associated with communications is the coordination of all efforts. According to Athena du Pre, lack of communication can lead to duplicated efforts, costly (and sometimes life-threatening) delays, frustration, and wasted time (Du Pre, A., 2003).     I just received several reports that the public water supplies of several towns in our region have become contaminated with a life-threatening biological agent. The biological agent could adversely affect human health in a variety of ways that could range from relatively mild allergic reactions, to very serious medical conditions leading to death. It is my duty as the director to make sure this is through and not a rumor from the public, because this a serious issue for our community. The first thing that we will be doing is making sure that the employees are ok. This is something they need to hear from us, be that it is bad news. I would rather talk to my employees than then turn on the News at six and hear it. I would not want them to get it from a website either. I also would not want them hearing it from TV or radio news, also my patients and families need to hear the truth from us as well.
