Dr. Sneary, Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at SJSU

He works at SJSU and he is in charge of the whole biology program here.

I learned from the Speaker that Advanced degrees are required in biological professions whether it be going to health profession school, or getting a masters or P.H.D.

Many jobs from biotech companies, to teaching positions or medical jobs are available with a biology degree.

I found it Interesting that Dr. Sneary goes telemark skiing, and was able to completely research the inner ear of turtles.

To be successful in Biology you need the desire to succeed and passion about the coursework that you are taking.

Dr. Honda, Entomologist, Professor in the Department of Biology at SJSU

He works at SJSU as a professor of upper division biology courses and specifically entomology ones.

I learned from the speaker that Entomologists are highly sought after in the United States for many jobs involving agriculture.

Potential Jobs are inspectors for agricultural companies such as
Ocean Spray, and jobs for the U.S department of agriculture and homeland security.

I found it interesting that entomologists are the ones that develop pesticides and insect resistant crops.

To be successful in this profession, someone would have to love what they do and complete multiple degrees to get there.

Dr. Elizabeth Pollum, Stanford University Researcher

She works at Stanford university researching Polio and HIV RNA.

I learned that that biochemistry is one of the top growing job fields of today.

Potential Jobs with a Biochem degree include working for large corporations and teaching.

I found it interesting that Dr. Pollum played in a rock band while in grad school.

To be successful you have to embrace the word NERD, as someone who is passionate about the subject and be with other people who are as well.

The school bell rings on the first day of school. Your students start to trickle into the class little by little. They see the various microscopes and dissecting equipment, and their eyes go wide. Biology is a very fun and interactive subject for students, which makes it all the more exciting to be able to teach it. Ever since I took sophomore biology in high school I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. My teacher just always seemed like he was having as much fun as us. That’s what made me want to become a biology teacher, so I interviewed some people who are currently in the field to get some perspective on it. The reason for this is because a lot of people kind of just brush off the subject of high school biology, but for me it was one of the best classes I ever had the pleasure of attending. It’s what opened the door for my interest in the sciences; I just had so much fun learning about why all the things in the world existed and did what they did. I found that being a biology teacher is a very rewarding career choice because not only do you get to work with students, but you also get to work with your favorite subject every day.…

When it comes to school, I guess you could say that my mom was a bit of a nerd. She was extremely smart and exceeded in every class. She went to a Catholic school until fourth grade. She said, about this school, “Not much happened here, I was placed in Reading and Math groups by myself, and no, I was never hit with rulers over the knuckles by the nuns, if you were wondering.” In middle school, she was placed in an advanced class and by the time she left she was finished with all her required high school math classes. She was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society where she held the office of Secretary. In high school, since she was a big nerd, she took college level math courses and AP in all other classes. She also played…

There are numerous courses that have to be taken in order to major in Biology; while also minoring in Chemistry as well. There are introductory classes that need to be taken like: “Introductory Biology: Comparative Physiology” or “Introductory Biology: Cell and Development Biology.” Also “General Chemistry” for two semesters with “Organic Chemistry.” One semester of calculus is needed with a second semester of calculus or an equivalent of statistics. Physics is also necessary in order to complete the major of Biology; two semesters of “General Physics I and II.” And finally there needs to be Biochemistry courses taken, such as “Principles of Biochemistry, Individualized Instructions.” Majoring in Biology would grant me various skills in knowing how the world we live in is made up of and how we live as human beings on this Earth. I believe Biology is the most knowledgeable area of study because it teaches how certain things work and what they are made up of. There are numerous career opportunities in Biology, including field work and research as well. Neuroscience is an example of a career which has to do with additional emphasis on Physiology.…
