Emotional Intelligence

I am going to write about my friend Mrs. Lauren Black, she is a clinical therapist that works for a hospital, which mainly deals with drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues as well. Being self-aware, Lauren is able to use her knowledgeable judgment on what is the best course of action when dealing with her patients. When faced with a task that she is not familiar with, she ascertains with coworkers in other departments so that the issue can get resolved in a timely manner. When she is found wrong, in dealing with client complaints, her resolve is admit fault, move on, and learn from the mistake. Dealing with her clients is demanding, stressful, and at times can have her spirits down, she always finds a way to tune out all of the negativity and move forward with her charges.
Despite the many challenges that therapists face; when dealing with the most disgruntle of patient(s)/client(s), remaining calm so that they can get through the session has been ingrained in them, but actually practicing that trait takes strength of mind and endurance of spirit. Dealing with the numerous struggles that go on, when she is at her height of anxiety she may come off as being cold and talking to her in this state seems overextended.
Self-Awareness in Lauren represents her being truthful, knowing when she is wrong and seeking the best alternative to that part of that aspect of herself. The self-confidence that she exhibits in her daily routines is tethered to her willingness to model the “Serenity Prayer”, which she pushes on the patient(s)/client(s), so that they may move pass the negativity in their lives and move forward towards new horizons.
Self-Regulation in Lauren resonates in the way that she is able to control her emotions in her high anxiety job; whether it is by channeling the anger she may feel towards a client/patient, when hearing what they go through on a day-to-day basis, to dealing with the astringent nature of being non-biased when she is bewildered after hearing a story that she cannot seem to wrap her mind around, just another mechanism in the life of a therapist. In contrast, after dealing with some of the client(s)/patient(s) Lauren’s demeanor might falter and she comes off being short and insensitive, being able to “flip a switch” and be apathetic when things are too much for her to handle, but not entirely forgetting that she has an obligation to give the client/patient the help they need. In closing the fact that Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation hold a key in Lauren’s job duties and the fact that they play a role both of them I felt that she was the best candidate for me to use for this exercise, as I have clearly stated in this entry I hope you have enjoyed this.

    The Schopenhauer Cure (2006), authored by Irvin Yalom, is a novel detailing the journey of a prominent psychotherapist, Julius Hertzfeld, after he discovers that he is slowly dying from a terminal illness. Faced with his own mortality, Julius begins to examine his life through his effectiveness as a therapist and his failures both in his personal and professional life. Julius also decides to make a brave decision: “live life to your fullest; and then, and only then, die” (p. 11). In his book, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy (2005), Yalom details eleven therapeutic factors that he associates with group change. These therapeutic factors include: instillation of hope, universality, imparting of information, altruism, corrective recapitulation of the primary family group, development of socializing techniques, imitative behavior, interpersonal learning, group cohesiveness, catharsis and existential factors. These therapeutic factors also play a large role in the evolution of the therapeutic group in The Schopenhauer Cure. While all of the above therapeutic factors are utilized throughout the book, the use of some specific therapeutic factors drew more attention than others: universality, instillation of hope, imparting information, cohesiveness, and catharsis. An example of when the therapeutic factor universality is used in the novel is in chapters 17 and 19 during an outburst where Bonnie confronted Rebecca. Shortly after the confrontation, Bonnie and Rebecca both admit that they resent the group; Bonnie resents the group for feeling ignored and Rebecca resents the group for feeling as though she is being criticized.
