After giving this topic of gratitude some careful thought, I have boiled it down to a definition of being grateful and appreciative for someone or something that you have in your life. And something I have gratitude towards is my relationship with my mother. I have always been relatively close with my mom, but over 2013 our relationship grew into something that I am truly grateful for.

The struggles that my mother faced during this past year were ones that she could not face alone. Being her daughter, I knew I immediately had to step up to the plate and help her be strong through those rough times. This past year, my parents went through a separation. It was the hardest thing that I have had to face in my life, so I can only imagine how it was for my mom. To help her stay strong while I was away at school was probably the hardest part of it all. But even with the distance, my relationship with her was growing stronger. I would not have been able to get through these issues without her reassurance of everything being alright. I truly know that she would have not been able to get through the separation without me by her side every step of the way. So with each other, we both helped the other to stay strong and focused to get through this rough patch of our lives.

I have much gratitude towards the relationship that I have built with my mom over this past year. Although, I am far away from my mom at the moment, I know I am making her proud by staying in school and achieving goals that she never could. Mostly, I am appreciative that I can always count on her to be there for me. I know that she will always be my support system.
