Gabi's Walkman Monologue
Gabi and Cecilia sat together on a vinyl seat at Detroit Metro airport. Other passengers glanced at them as they leaned towards each other, bopping their heads and mouthing the words to a song they were listening to on Gabi’s Walkman.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound...
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing…
Gabi was surprised to see tears in her best friend’s eyes as she sang along to the song.
Usually Cecilia was the strong one, the funny one, the one who had all the friends. Gabi felt a pit in her stomach as she sang along with her friend. For as long as she could remember, Cecilia had been her best friend. Their families lived across the street from each other, and Gabi had known Cecilia basically since the day she was born.

Of course, each family took vacations each summer so they’d been apart for seven, even ten days at a time, but a full month apart was something they’d never experienced. Gabi looked at her suitcase and her teary-eyed friend and wondered why she had decided to spend a full four weeks in Germany, when she could have spent the summer home working at the movie theater and swimming with Cecilia.
As the Simon and Garfunkel song faded out, Gabi noticed her friend Katie walk towards the gate. Katie was in her German class, and soon a few more classmates neared the gate, all looking around for familiar faces and wondering if their teacher, Frau Meyer, had arrived yet.
Katie came and sat next to Gabi and Cecilia, and started talking about the last time she was at the airport, the flight got delayed and they almost missed their connection. Gabi had never been on an airplane before, so all this was new to her, and she would have no idea what to do if their flight was delayed or if there were any change to their itinerary, which she had printed and placed in her backpack.
Just as their flight was being called to board, Frau Meyer arrived, to everyone’s

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Later, just a couple of minutes before Prep, I sat by the phone rooms, nauseous about how I would break the world-shattering news to Sophie. Ah, my beloved Sophie, we dated last year until she saw Matt Shauman. But I would have won her back with these tickets. Maybe I can say that I was suspended and Max will get them for her, so as not to break her fragile heart. So, plucking up my last piece of courage, I entered a phone cubicle and dialled her boarding house’s number. Brrrr, Brrrr, with numb fingers, they shook like an earthquake, so wedging the phone between my shoulder and ear, my breathing…

“Ugh!”, he grunts from how large the suitcase is. “Will you be able to carry that, Scottie?” she says, her face, worn from time, twists with concern for her son. “Of course”, he laughs. “Okay, if you’re sure.” She says as she opens the metal gate to the front yard. They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

They practically became a family to one another during high school. Each girl had worked tirelessly to achieve their long term goals of completing high school and getting accepted into a college they wanted to go. Marisela and Yadira faced the brevity of the situation because they weren't able to apply to the same colleges Clara and Elissa were able to because they lacked legal status and weren’t able to get the same opportunities. It caused a huge hindrance with the other girls because they were able to apply anywhere they want, get scholarships while the other two weren't able to do any of that. All the hard work Marisela and Yadira put into school felt like it would never pay off. “And Marisela had a good reason to fear that she might lose her friends in the process, for the subject of college had already caused the four girls to suffer their first major rift.” (Thorpe 20) This kept them separated and because they faced huge divide with legality, driving, applying for a bank account, etc became melancholic for Yadira and Marisela because they had very limited options as to what they could do. “The slow accumulation of ordinary things that they could not do became painful for the girls who lacked legal status to endure, especially given that their legal friends were able to accomplish basic tasks without difficulties. But nothing was more painful than the subject of college” (Thorpe 25). Legality had set in ways they…

That’s just great. My niece decided to leave her children here. I don't remember seeing a sign in front of my house designating it as a daycare center. It's not a place where you drop your children off on date night. I'm not a free babysitter. I am a grown man and I am getting tired of this. Therefore, I'm going to tell you all a story about me. I pulled my beanie securely on my head as I crouched down on a sturdy tree branch. My hunting knife reflected the dim light of the moon. It glinted letting my prey know I was there. "Yeah, I love a good chase!" I jumped from branch to branch as I chase my target. His brown hair was starting to gray but he ran pretty good for someone in their late forties. At least that's what boss lady said. I jumped down quietly as the man began to get tired. He began huffing as his pace slowed. I knocked into his back sending him into a tree. His chest heavily moved with his ragged breaths. I slowly approached him as I pulled my hunting knife back out. "Let play," I said in a deadpan tone. My eyes lost their light as I stared down at him.…

For most of the 100 or so sleepy-eyed people boarding the U.S. Airways shuttle to Boston from New York on a recent hazy Saturday morning, the 35-minute flight could not have been a bigger non-event. But that was not the case for about 20 passengers clustered nervously near the gate. Many clutched puzzle books and bags of sour candy as though they held talismans. Some made nervous jokes, others sobbed quietly. “I have pills with me just in case of an emergency,” said a teenage girl who planned to distract herself on the flight with celebrity magazines. Mariasol Flouty, a 44-year-old software developer from White Plains, held fast to her Sudoku book. “I had plane-crash nightmares,” she confessed. “I woke up very tense.” No one was more terrified than Beth Brenner, a 45-year-old mother of two teenagers from Somers, N.Y. “I was hysterical last night,” she said, “but my son said, ‘You’re going to be O.K.’ ” Ms. Brenner was crying quietly on the…

Her brown eyes took in the house that surrounded her, and a grin made its way on her face. Setting a note on the front table of the entrance, she left the house with another word and was escorted by Charles to the airport. He questioned Lily on the facts she educated herself on the Bahamas to “impress” her friends, but it was mostly for herself. Charles sended her off with an abrupt hug and Lily was off pulling her bags to meet her friends at the terminal. She exchanged smiles with the boyfriends she barely kept up with and a dog-pile hug from her friends as if they haven’t seen her in years. Lily wasn’t much of a hugger, pushing her way out of the mush of friends. Brushing herself off, she looked around at the groggy zombies that made up the airport. It was an amusing sight that brought a warm smile on the girl’s face, but her happy demeanor was demolished when Aiden arrived. She gave him his ticket without a greeting and moved up to her place in line quietly looking at her book. Her friends, especially the single ones would be ogling him like he was a God of some sort.…
