Exp 4: Properties of Gases
Lab Section: 73426

Data Tables:

Hydrogen

Step B: Describe the zinc and acid reaction.
As placing a small piece of Zn(mossy zinc) metal into the test tube containing the diluted HCI(Hydrochloric Acid) solution, gas bubbles rose from the solution slowly at the beginning and vigorously in process of time. As this reaction continued for a long time, transparent solution turned into white opaque color and black precipitates were formed and floated.

Step G: Record your observations with the flame and the hydrogen gas.
When gently squeezing a small portion of the hydrogen gas into the flame, the flame showed small flash with a pop.

Oxygen

Step B: Describe the hydrogen peroxide and manganese reaction.
As adding hydrogen peroxide to the test tube containing a few pieces of manganese metal, gas bubbles rose from the solution slowly at first and vigorously over time. This reaction continued for a long time and solution turned into brown opaque color.

Step E: Record your observations with the glowing wooden toothpick and the oxygen-filled pipet.
The flame of the glowing wooden toothpick grew bigger instantaneously, as it is placed into the oxygen filled pipet. Also water vapor was generated inside of the pipet.

Hydrogen and Oxygen Mixture

Step D: Record your observations with the flame and the gases in the pipet.
When the flame was placed into the pipet containing hydrogen and oxygen mixture, the flame showed small flash with a pop.

Carbon Dioxide

Part 1
Step E: Describe what is happening to the limewater.
The limewater turned into white opaque color, and gas bubbles and white precipitate was formed, as placed the open end of the gas delivery tube(reaction between sodium bicarbonate and white vinegar) into the limewater.

Part 2
Step C: Observe and record the result with the bromthymol blue.
The bromthymol blue turned into transparent yellow color.

Step F: Record your

Suffocation is the main cause of death during fire, and by the help of this experiment we can know that when there is a fire and you are standing, you are easily suffocate and when you duck you can avoid the suffocation because during a fire the warmer air particles goes up so the smoke and the oxygen also goes up that can cause suffocation while the colder air goes down. So it is better to duck during fire to avoid suffocation. Like in the experiment, the longest candle goes the fire out first because it has no more space that it already reached the top of the beaker and the water is also high. And the shortest candle’s light goes out last because the shortest candle has more space than the longest candle so it has more oxygen to use and it will last longer than the taller…
