Experiment 4: Properties of Gases
Report Submitted: June 21, 2013
Title: Properties of Gases
Purpose: To analyze a few physical and chemical properties of gases as well as using those properties to identify the gases.
Procedure:
* For Hydrogen I placed a piece of Zn metal into a test tube with diluted HCl. * To produce oxygen I added Hydrogen peroxide to manganese. * Next, I added baking soda to vinegar. This caused a quick and energetic reaction! The gas from the reaction I pumped into some Limewater. * Then I mixed Alka Seltzer and water and pumped the gas caused by that reaction into some limewater.
Data:
Data Table: Experiment Results | Gas | Flame Reaction | Glowing Splint | Limewater reaction | Bromothymol blue reaction | Hydrogen | It enlarged the flame. | | | | Oxygen | It lit up quickly | | | | Hydrogen & oxygen | It puts it out. | | | | Carbon dioxide | It puts it out | | It bubbled and turned cloudy. | It turned it yellow | Alka Seltzer | | | Bubbles stayed in the limewater. | | Breath | | | Nothing happened | |

Balanced Chemical Equation for Oxygen and Hydrogen: 2H2+O2 2H2O
Observations:
* The hydrogen reaction moved very slowly and I really couldn’t see anything happening. However, when I exposed it to flame, it lit up very well! * The oxygen reaction began immidiatly once I added the manganese. It started fizzing a lot and the liquid turned from a clear to a light brown. When I exposed it to flame it also lit up very well. * I then mixed the hydrogen with the oxygen and tried to light it. However this didn’t work at all. * Next, I added baking soda to vinegar. This caused a quick and energetic reaction! The gas from the reaction I pumped into some Limewater, which caused it to bubble and turn cloudy * Next, I let the gas from the sodium and hydrogen peroxide go into some Bromthymol Blue. It turned yellow. * When I mixed the Alka Seltz/water solution excess gas into the limewater it bubbled

The Ideal Gas Law equation is PV=nRT. “P” stands for pressure, “V” is for volume, “n” gives the number of moles, “R” is the gas constant and “T” is for temperature. The ideal gas constant value is 0.082057 (L x atm)÷(mol x K). The purpose of the experiment was to be able to measure the temperature and the mass of each gas tested, to configure a constant and determine which gas is the most “ideal”. To configure “R” the equation will be, R= PV ÷ nT.…

    Alka Seltzer Lab Report

During this lab we tested the reaction of alka seltzer in water. We used water and bromothymol blue (BTB) to help hypothesize what was happening with the alka seltzer in water. When we put the alka seltzer tablet in the water, it started fizzing. It created a lot of bubbles in the water which tells us that some kind of a gas was created when the alka seltzer was put into the water. The next step was the hypothesize what that gas might be. That mystery gas created by the alka seltzer in water had a reaction with the BTB. Since the BTB solution was under the soda bottle dome, a reasonable conclusion is that the gas released by the alka seltzer had a reaction on the BTB solution. The mystery gas turned the BTB solution from blue to yellow. This same reaction occurred when I blew carbon dioxide (CO2) into BTB solution. Since we exhale CO2, and the same reaction occurred with the mystery gas, I can hypothesize that when alka seltzer is combined with water, it creates CO2 gas. So what I learned from this experiment is that alka seltzer when combined with water…

One Alka-Seltzer tablet was weighed on the analytical balance. Then a piece was measured out to be between 0.21 and 0.28 grams. 500mL of distilled water was added to a 600mL beaker. 80mL of water was mixed with 20mL of 6M HCl in a 150mL beaker. A 1.5g piece of Alka-Seltzer was added to this mixture and all CO2 was allowed to escape. The mixture was filtered then added to a 50mL buret until full. The glass tube end of the rubber tubing was inserted about 2 inches in to the buret. Using a finger to cover the mouth of the buret, it was quickly inverted and placed into the water in the 600mL beaker. The water level was brought to 50mL by carefully adjusting the stopcock.…

Before I began the procedure I gathered all my supplies from the given list in the manual. From there I began the actual experiment and diluted the HCL placed in a test tube and then placed the ZN in the tube as well. I placed the stopper and gas delivery plastic system on the test tube and arranged the tube in the well plate. I then took the test tube filled with water inverted it and placed on top of the gas delivery system, I had the well plate in a large bowl in case of flow over. I then removed and placed my thumb over the opening so gas wouldn’t escape I lit a match and held it approx 1 cm away and allowed a small drop from the pipet onto the flame to observe the reaction. From here I took my pipet bulb and marked it in 3 equal parts with a marker. I filled the pipet with water and set it into the gas generation tube. When it was about 2/3 full of gas I removed it and set it facing down into the well holder as per the directions. I then cleaned up the other test tube disposed of the acid and washed the test tube and rubber stopper with water thoroughly. I then began the oxygen portion of the experiment where I placed some Mn into a test tube. I added some hydrogen peroxide and filled to nearly the top. I placed the rubber stopper with gas delivery system and put into the well plate in a straight postion. I filled the pipet with water and once again inverted it and placed in on top of the gas delivery system. I then watched as it became displaced with oxygen and removed it placed my thumb over it so it wouldn’t escape. I took a wooden toothpick and lit it then blew it out quickly while it was still hot and had a red glow to the stick I inserted the toothpick into the pipet filled with…

For this project my group and I used a Bunsen burner to light the gas up. A Bunsen burner, named after "Robert Bunsen", is a lab piece equipment that produces a single flame which is used for heating, sterilization and combustion. Our instructor, Dr. Immel, provided us with six heavy metals those metals were: Barium, Calcium, Lithium, Potassium, Sodium, Strontium. My group got a platinum flame loop, and decontaminated it with the water beaker filled half way with water. To light the Bunsen burner my group used a striker, which Dr. Immel provided. We started off with Barium, when Charlotte put it into the flame it gave the flame a yellow kind of color and a sprinkle of green. After we decontaminated the loop, we moved onto calcium. Calcium gave the flame an intense orange, it was extraordinary. After that, we got to Lithium, Lithium gave the flame an intense red. The next metal is Potassium, it gave the flame a light purple, which kind of resembled white. Sodium was a unique one, giving the flame an orange look, resembling the original flame color. It was very hard to tell the difference. The last of the metals is Strontium, which gave the flame a red color and switched very fast over to…
