[Divergent]

In the book Divergent there are a lot of literary devices. Some of the literary devices I found are personification, metaphor, onomatopoeia, setting and many more.

Divergent takes place in a futuristic Chicago. It's divided into five factions in hopes of creating a better city. The city of Chicago in the past was abandoned and torn apart. There plan is to rebuild the city by using these factions to keep more organized and peaceful. All events in the book take place in the five factions, Amity, Erudite, Candor, Abnegation, and Dauntless. These factions are all located in different parts of the city of Chicago, but the majority of the book takes place in the Dauntless faction. This is where Tris is going through an initiation

When is the last time that you saw a literary device? In a poem, or a novel? Perhaps a short story? Literary devices: we all use them, we all love them, but what can it really do for an author's writing? When used correctly they can add character and dimension to one's writing, but what some fail to remember is that even the best writers can fall extremely short to writing excellent literary elements. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell uses literary devices such as personifications and allusions to help the reader better understand the plot and characters. Although Connell excelled in his numerous uses of personifications, his allusions he attempted were far from perfection.…

In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Tris has to make the most important decision of her life by choosing a new faction. Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.…

“To emphasize the work seems to involve severing it from those who actually read it,…” (23). If all the focus would be on just the text of the literature, then it’s easy to say we are doing nothing more than ignoring the context and reducing the analytical explanations of literature; making them into a set of rhetorical devices. Brooks, throughout his essay, explained how he was attacked multiple times for his use of New Criticism but he does commiserate those who would “recommend brighter, more amateur and more human criticism” (25). Much like with poetry, ignoring the context means we would be ignoring the emotional effects it would bring towards the readers. With these disadvantages, there would be limitations with the theory.…

The first literary device used in the novel is the symbolism of the black Mary. The black Mary picture that Lily first carries around with her symbolizes her mother Deborah and a piece of her Lily has left. Lily has the picture and wants to find where it’s from to discover something about her mom. Lily eventually ends up at the Boatwright house and discovers that’s where the picture came from. When Lily sees the statue of the black Mary in the Boatwright house she describes it as “black as could be, twisted like driftwood from being out in the weather, her face a map of all the storms and journeys she’d been through. Her right arm was raised as if she was pointing the way, except her fingers were closed in a fist. It gave her a serious look, like she…
