Tris In Veronica Roth's Divergent
In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Tris has to make the most important decision of her life by choosing a new faction. Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.
Tris feels as if she is not selfless enough for Abnegation, she has always felt as if she was an outsider because she does not act like the others in her faction. She observes them, and she wishes that she could be

If Tris was truly meant to be in Abnegation, she would have let her blood drip onto the stones instead of the coals. Choosing Abnegation would have been selfless because she is doing it for her parents, who had already lost one child, but instead, she chooses her own needs before theirs. This is why, when she lets the blood drip onto the coals, she thinks “I am selfish. I am brave” (Roth 47). This shows that Tris does belong in Dauntless and not in Abnegation, because it takes bravery to go against her family like that, and it was not a selfless act to choose another faction over her own. She proves her bravery in other ways, by jumping out of the train, and by climbing the Ferris wheel, which is a feat that even Four is afraid of. Tris has never known any life other than Abnegation, and she has never been taught about the Dauntless way of life, yet she still manages to do all these brave feats without the help or encouragement of her family or friends. When Tris hops onto the train as soon as she chooses Dauntless in the choosing ceremony, she is worried about the choice that she made. She worries that she will not fit in with the others. That is why she decides to jump first into the Dauntless headquarters. Before she jumps, she thinks “I am proud. It will get me into trouble someday, but today it makes me brave” (Roth 57). This shows that even though she was hesitating about jumping into the pit, her bravery helped her to pull through, and it helped to give her the courage to be the first one to jump. Tris has been debating what faction she should pick in the choosing ceremony, and her willingness to jump into the pit proves that she made the right decision, because only a member of Dauntless would want to jump into the pit, and a member of Abnegation would never have even made it off of the train. A member of Abnegation would never be able to survive

The importance of being Divergent is first introduced to Beatrice after she completes her Aptitude Test (which determines which faction a person should choose). Tori (the test manager) reports to her: “’My conclusion,’ she explains, ‘is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. People who get this result are…’ She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. ‘… are called … Divergent.’ She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. She walks around the side of the chair and leans in close to me. ‘Beatrice,’ she says, ‘under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important.’” The manner in which Tori says that Tris is a Divergent means that it is an extremely rare condition that changes the way people look at them, and this is meant that Tris would have to create her identity alone. Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless (selflessness and bravery respectively), it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four. After he and Tris exit the fear simulation room, he says: “’I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your…

Tris’s eyes flickered to the other girl. She was beautiful in a cold kind of way. Her ice blue eyes shone from under pitch-black hair that fell to her waist. Dressed in a black leather jacket and tight black leggings, she looked like she was born to be Dauntless. The injured girl found her eyes going straight back to Tobias. She couldn’t make sense of what was going on. Her pain-addled mind couldn’t keep up with the events that were playing…

Abnegation has very strict rules, and banned anything that makes one selfish. When Tris takes a test to see which faction she belongs in, her results were inconclusive. She was informed that she has a rare condition called Divergent, which means she can belong in more than one faction. The government says that it is dangerous, so they try to kill anyone who has it. Tris wants to conceal it, so even though being curious is selfish, she asks different sources for help and the information improved her understanding of it. Dauntless are known for being tough, so in initiation they are taught to fight. Tris is not strong, so she gets knocked out in the first thirty seconds of her fight. While in the hospital she is told she can not continue training, and she will have to leave. She felt discouraged because she did not risk everything just to quit now. Tris was not going to take no for an answer; so even though she was in extreme pain, she ran into the training room to continue initiation. The last occasion that Tris remains undeterred is when she goes zip lining. To take their minds of the pressure of initiation, everyone decides to go zip lining. Nobody wants Tris to go because they feel like she does not fit in with them, but she stands up for herself and reluctantly, they let her go. Tris was petrified, because if she backed out she would be made fun of; but she went down the…

In the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth society is structured into factions. The faction system does not give individuals the freedom of having their own ideas outside of the factions. Some of the individuals have no idea which faction they wish to be a part of and having to decide what the rest of their life will consist of at the age of sixteen is appalling. Once finished choosing their faction they must pass initiation and seeing family members from other factions is limited due to their maxim, “faction before blood.” (Pg. 76)…

“Leave me to my foolish plan: I am not afraid of the danger; if it means death, it will not be the worst of deaths-death without honor.” (Pro.L. 86-88) Even if she has no one to help her, she is still doing the task without hesitation. Her sister says in foolish, but she does not want to give up. She knows that if she dies it is honorable. People will respect her and not abhorrent her. “As much as it was a point of utter determination, it was also a point of surrender”. By reading Teria’s story one could also say that “it was a moment of truth”. She seemed to have reached new levels of self awareness and consciousness about what her life was like up to that point and what could be from there on. What we see here is a defining moment, a moment of truth and a moment of decisiveness. To take action and turn the focus on what is and what could be, not on what was. By all accounts she has reached a level of self awareness to such an extent that she could transcend herself and connect to her spiritual dimension where a discovery was made of life changing proportions.…
