In 2012, the success of an entrepreneur is measured in many ways. Those include the number of new ideas launched, the revenue and profits earned, and the ways in which he or she serves an industry or a community. For many entrepreneurs, one of the most rewarding aspects of running their own business is how they are able to impact others – not only those they are serving in their…
Ellsberg provides an array of reasons why students should drop out of college. He argues that our education system is hindering future entrepreneurs by not teaching them skill sets to be used in the real world. “Street-smart,” as is he says, cannot be taught in a classroom. Given the National Bureau of Economic Research’s findings that nearly all job creation in America come from startup businesses, Ellsberg feels skills like sales, networking, and creativity cannot be learned in the classroom. In addition, without a wide network of advisers, clients, vendors and talent, a start-up business will not get off the ground. You do not learn how to network “crouched over a desk studying for multiple-choice exam” as he puts it. Finally he states entrepreneurs must embrace failure; without knowing what is not going to work, one cannot succeed.…
Entrepreneurs are worshipped for their vast knowledge and achievements and often times, their contributions to society are praised and greatly appreciated. However, most of these successful individuals are not successful simply because of how creative or unique they are, but mainly for other reasons that are not seen at a first glance. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, he writes that the success of these achievers is actually dependent on their upbringing, and the factors that made them who they are. His opinion remains true as most if not all successful people are really just ordinary people who had advantageous circumstances, favorable backgrounds, and the will to do hard work.…
In this sense like Bill Gates my family has had a very fortunate larger matrix. In 1841 two of my ancestors, Clemens and August began a family business within selling textiles. Were it not for these two ancestors of mine, the history of my family would be completely different. As my family’s larger matrix developed itself, it influenced my family to become very international. The retail business that was founded as C&A in the Netherlands became international as it grew to several countries within Europe as well as a few others in different continents. As it was in several different countries, family members had to move to certain locations. There they met their future wives and increased the diversity within the family. If my father, Erik had not been part of the family business he would have never had to travel to Brazil where he met my mother, Nara. My father would have married a completely different woman making sure that I would never have been…
Relationships “Key to successful organisations” “Relationships are one of the most important assets in any business and are crucial in driving growth – yet they are rarely discussed and almost never measured, according to a new initiative from a group of organisations including the CIPD”.…
Roizen leveraged her social capital effectively by building and maintaining her networks through performance and consistency during her interactions. She was not just responsive to the requests from her contacts, but she was also consistent in following up with what she said she would do for them. Furthermore, she was productive in creating value for her networks by bridging the gaps between social networks i.e. the so-called “structural holes”. Heidi was a catalyst in bringing ideas and people together where she saw mutual benefit for both parties. In addition, by filling the “structural holes”, Heidi was able to tap into a vast network of contacts by keeping close relationships with the “nuclei” in certain circles.…
“Always try to build something special, it’s part of this decision to build important things and have an impact on society.” Is a quote from Mike Lazaridis. He is a famous entrepreneur yet as a name he is not well known, you might recognize him more for the famous wireless handheld device known as the Blackberry, co-founder of Quantum Valley Investments and founder of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. One of the things Mike is known as is a “passionate advocate”.…

PROBLEM- When an individual of Heidi’s broad network needed a personal favor in reviewing their business plan for gaining venture capital from SOFTBANK, Heidi acted equally amongst her network and was forced to say ‘No’. Does saying ‘No’ damage Heidi’s intimate network that had been the pillar of her career success?…
Roizen’s young adult life shaped the reasons as to why she was going to become independent and self-sufficient. After suffering the tragic loss of her fiancé she set out to build a career and learned very early on that building connections with high-level people was something she had a talent for and something she ought not to miss out on when given the opportunity. Roizen knew she wanted to be in the technology industry, but with a creative writing degree she had limited options of jobs to choose from. At Tandem computers she wrote the internal newspaper serving as a link between the executives (including the CEO) and the rest of the employees. Roizen immediately realized how to leverage this aspect of her job description and thus began a decade long career of networking. After Tandem Roizen went to get her MBA and then partnered with her brother to launch a company that sold spreadsheet software he developed. T-Maker did not have excessive amounts of capital like some of its competitors, but Roizen knew that with her outgoing personality and her desire to meet (interesting and smart) people she could make the company successful. While marketing T/Maker she made important relationships with people that would end up shaping her career as well as dominating the Silicon Valley technology scene. Roizen was taking a gamble spending so much of her time and energy in developing rapport with these people, but thus far it had proven to be an integral factor in her career development.…

Entrepreneurs with good ideas have initial success but face new challenges getting to the next level…
For me, a true business knows how to back up his stories and how he can manifest his success in a presentable manner. I believe that he is a successful businessman by hearing how he started his career; with a 20 year long sales curve and 5 years before people started acknowledging his company, despite the fact that it took a while to get his business going, thousands of dollars later he still managed to arrive to his current state -- owning an international clothing brand with 40 branches worldwide. Furthermore, his speech enabled me to contemplate on the importance of education with regards to starting up a business. In his speech, Moon stated, “the broader you can build your knowledge, the better”. Accordingly, as he possesses a master’s degree in commerce, as well as pronounced experience in marketing, these clearly led him to know what is important in a business; such as what customers look for, the significance of being aware of ‘the hook’ -- the characteristic that would lead people to consider trying out your product, which was the merino wool in this case, and where to allocate the money he earns along the way. Moon stated that half of the money was utilized to build the brand, and the other half was allocated towards developing the brand’s identity; emphasizing his point of how consequential the business’ influence on people is -- without it, Icebreaker would cease…
According to Cunningham and Lischeron (1991), an entrepreneur’s personal antecedents relate to his ‘values towards work and life’ (pg 47). They suggest that through relationships with friends and peers, an individual gains values and ideals which determine whether or not he develops the mentality of an entrepreneur. As well, the role of the family is the most influential antecedent of a personal nature, and can come in the form of motivation and/or financial support (Shapero & Sokol 1982). Bob Ansett was born into the tourism business. He was the son of the late…
The last but not the least, success in one field relies on how much experience we have in that field and the experience doesn't come without working. The more you work the more experience you get. For instance, my brother used to work for a very small company owned by his friend. This company was later closed because of bankruptcy. The cause of bankruptcy was wrong strategies and decisions made by the owner. After the failure, he went to a university and worked for another company so that he could obtain experience and become a successful businessman.…
