Reflecting back to the speaker series where Jeremy Moon, explained about his journey of making his company “Icebreaker”, an outlet for outdoor and apparel clothing all made from merino wool, a success. He shared the rollercoaster ride that is his life, his ups and downs, from when he started to where he is now. In his early life, he worked in a research company which helped him comprehend consumer behaviour. Furthermore, his principal objective in establishing a business was to empower Jeremy into associating with diverse cultures, whilst representing New Zealand as his country. Moon created businesses when he was a kid, until he reached his present state as the owner of an international company. This all started when he travelled farmland
For me, a true business knows how to back up his stories and how he can manifest his success in a presentable manner. I believe that he is a successful businessman by hearing how he started his career; with a 20 year long sales curve and 5 years before people started acknowledging his company, despite the fact that it took a while to get his business going, thousands of dollars later he still managed to arrive to his current state -- owning an international clothing brand with 40 branches worldwide. Furthermore, his speech enabled me to contemplate on the importance of education with regards to starting up a business. In his speech, Moon stated, “the broader you can build your knowledge, the better”. Accordingly, as he possesses a master’s degree in commerce, as well as pronounced experience in marketing, these clearly led him to know what is important in a business; such as what customers look for, the significance of being aware of ‘the hook’ -- the characteristic that would lead people to consider trying out your product, which was the merino wool in this case, and where to allocate the money he earns along the way. Moon stated that half of the money was utilized to build the brand, and the other half was allocated towards developing the brand’s identity; emphasizing his point of how consequential the business’ influence on people is -- without it, Icebreaker would cease
Without this source people will not determine who you are and where you belong. For me, it is a life protector, as it will guide you to your next steps in life and into the great and open world. With it, you have the capability to discover your skills and how to use it in the future ahead of you, just like Jeremy Moon. He became successful and attained several milestones at such a young age -- education stepped in his life and made him to the great entrepreneur that he is now. Through Jeremy Moon’s story, he has inspired me to focus on the goals I have for my life as soon as possible because you never know where it will take you in the near future and what kind of success and achievements are waiting to happen. I now realise the importance to travel the world, as the unexpected will inevitably come in your way, and it could potentially have drastic effects on your life and who you are as a person. Just like Moon, he was just travelling and unanticipatedly, he found the merino wool which started his whole career in an instant. Using this reflection, I will improve on my academic life as a student to gain the knowledge and skills that will eventually help me in the future. I will now need to keep my mind focused on what I learn everyday in or outside the learning environment to perceive how life works out in the great wilderness. As my last step, I now need to have pride
