Ethics for Teachers
Ethics for Teachers
Educators are held to a higher standard of behavior than other professionals. The behavior of teachers is judged more harshly. While some wrong behavior is excusable for others, unethical behavior is inexcusable for teachers. Teachers are authority figures, role models, behavioral examples and surrogate parents (Weldon 2003). In some instances the teacher is the only authority figure in a child’s life, so if that trust is broken where is a child to turn?
There are many instances of unethical teacher behavior, I have found just a few. In school district 52 in B.C. two teachers are facing charges of sexual exploitation of students. One of the teachers was employed for five years and was charged on Dec. 23 with three cases of sexual exploitation of a young person (Schumacher, 2008). Another teacher was charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation of a person with a disability (Schumacher, 2008). Upon the completion of the districts investigation the first teacher was fired with cause and the second teacher was suspended from his duties. Lisa “As with anything, it’s until something happens that you look a little closer at all of the policies that you have,” said Last. “I’m assuming as a parent and community member that here is a code of conduct for any teacher. Like doctors have their code of ethics, I’m assuming teachers have their own as well.”(Schumacher, 2008). Last is the chair of School District 52. After the charges the school district began reviewing practices to help avoid future issues.
In Bakersfield, CA a teacher was charged with two felony counts of oral copulation with a person under age 18(Kotowski, 2008). “If we just say that we kissed that we made out, at most we made out we kissed we just kind of held and caressed each other ten that’s not statutory rape,” Neal said. “And that saves me from a hell of a lot of trouble.”(Kotowski). Neal told the student to lie about what had happened between

We realize that the creation, dissemination, and possession of the nude pictures and the sexting messages were all instigated by the class teacher with whom he had an affair. The teacher knew that she was wrong in her endeavors, including engagement in an affair with a minor. She was also aware of the consequences of sexual exploitation of minors. This case is not one of a felony committed by a minor, but one of sexual exploitation of a minor. The testimonies given by the accused can only be interpreted as such. The young man is innocent and everything about his position is contrary to his wishes. In this case, he is not a sex offender who should face registration as someone else was just taking advantage of…

When reviewing multiple ethical paradigms, Shapiro and Gross (2013) stated one must understand the definition of ethics. From the Greeks, the word ethos meant “customs” or “usages”, but later the word ethics was defined as meaning “disposition or character, customs, and approved ways of acting” (Shapiro and Gross, 2013). When theorist and educators began to develop models to explain ethics in an educational realm, Sergiovanni sought after moral leadership as a principle of justice in regards to his “virtuous schools” (Shapiro and Gross, 2013). Sergiovanni believed leaders in education to be stewards within the educational system to be just and beneficent, by having a deep concern for the welfare of the school as a community (Shapiro and Gross, 2013). This theory was to extend beyond the school and into the community, by taking in the students, teachers, administrators, and families well-being into account through equality, dignity, and fair play for all (Shapiro and Gross, 2013).…

My responsibility and role as a teacher in relation to the above can be split into 3 parts. As a teacher I have a legislative requirement to act within the accordance to the law as defined in an Act of Parliament and usually enforceable through the court. I am obligated to act within a code of practice which is a set of rules outlining how a person in a particular profession or situation is expected to behave. In addition to this a statutory code of practice approved by Parliament and admissible as evidence in any legal action is to be adhered to.…

Before reading the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession in Florida, I wasn’t quite aware exactly why the State Board of Education needed these written codes. The Code of Ethics states that teachers must not violate the Code of Ethics and that they may be subject to revocation or suspension to their educators certificate or other penalties as provided by law. The Code of Ethics is basically broken down into three major parts, which involve an obligation to the student, an obligation to the public and lastly an obligation to the profession of education. This seems to be some serious stuff to not mess with, and as one of my professor likes to say these obligation are written to make the “big dogs” in education satisfied. Although I do believe there is a purpose for these areas. I also think that the Code of Ethics deals with how a teacher should simply carry themselves in their own teaching enviroment including their duty and knowing commitment that they signed up for. “By virtue of their leadership capacity, teachers are traditionally held to a high moral standard in the community”, this shows high importance of teachers knowledge and understanding of the way you should act and the morals they should bring along with them. Since the late 1960’s Florida teachers has always served under a Code of Ethics for Educators, which was quite similar to the Code of Ethics now by the National Education Association. That Code of Ethics wasn’t enforced until 1982 when the State Board then revised the code recommended by the Education Standards Commission. Now the most current Code of Ethics of the Education Profession in Florida stated that any Florida educator who violated any of the principles is subject to straight penalty. In the whole scheme of things this does bring up the topic of whether teachers can truly have their own private life aside from school life. Issues regarding the Code of Ethics can appear through many classrooms lesson plans and activities…
