An Embarrassing Experience

The small embarrassing moments in life are the ones that make us laugh and cry. I have done countless embarrassing things in my life, and when I look back I have to laugh because most of them are extremely foolish acts by me that back fired on me.

I was a member of my school drama club. At the end of the year, we were going to present a play based on a famous book called Jane Eyre. I was to play the part of the main male character, Mr. Rochester. Our play was going to be performed before parents, important guests and the whole school. So, we wanted to make sure that everything went smoothly.

Two days before the actual performance, we had a dress rehearsal. It went off very well. Hannah, who was playing the part of the main female character, Jane, seemed anxious. Hannah said, `Oh dear, they say that if everything goes smoothly during the dress rehearsal, things will go wrong during the performance itself!' We hoped that was not true. The night before the performance, I felt a bit nervous. I kept going over my lines again and again, although I knew them perfectly. My family members were quite tired of hearing me practicing.

On the day of the performance, all the performers had to be in school several hours earlier to put on our make-up and costumes. Some of us went over our lines again. Mrs. Wong, the drama club adviser, encouraged us and told us to just do our best.

The parents, guests and school pupils arrived. Soon, it was time for the curtain to go up. This was it, I told myself. This was the moment I had spent months preparing for. Everything went well in the first half of the play. It was a rather solemn play with hardly anything comic to laugh at but the audience looked interested.
Then came the most important scene in which Mr. Rochester was supposed to throw off his cloak to reveal his identity to Jane. I had never had any trouble with this scene during rehearsals.
But now, as I was flinging off the cloak and saying, ‘Jane,

As my row got the queue to stand up we all rose in unison, perfectly as if we had mastered it in practice. My legs were shaking like Jell-O, I was jumpy and my palms were sweaty. As I waited for our class president to call my name I stood at the edge of the stage; finally he said, “Kiara La’Shray Saucer”. Focusing on was not falling I shook the principles hand and smiled for the camera, I was in a…

The action from scene to scene to scene was very well rehearsed. In the chapter on action from Costantin Stanislavski An Actor Prepares, it is states that ‘all action within the theatre must have an inner justification, be coherent, logical, and real’ (Stanislavski 46). I truly believed that child-like wonder was at work regarding interaction in performances by Carolyn Coppedge, Nazli Sarpkaya, Stephanie King, and company. I believe these acting mechanisms were effective in communication underlined messages: having freedom of choice in one’s life, wanting love, desire, and so forth. They briefly reminded me of free form exercises done in class where we reacted to invisible mediums that were of meaning. As for costumes, the dresses didn’t exactly provide the impression of escaped brides; I felt that King as Thyona made the most of her character and was free of any boundaries they may have presented; I was able to see her as more than a runaway bride. The art of if is something I postulate as having been necessary to so robustly support a character of Thyona’s standing. Stanislavski writes that when posed with a situation within given circumstance, one must answer to its call whole-heartedly; an actor is overall persuaded to fulfill the demands of an if (Stanislavski 46-48). King definitely answered this call, and in doing so, was one of two actors that caught the most attention. The other was Richard McDonald as Constantine; McDonald’s vibrant energy paralleled King’s in deliverance of role. To once again refer to the super objective, the inner grasp and through line of action are essential to the creative process involved in reaching said objective (Stanislavski 279). McDonald’s undertone in Constantine’s monologue regarding the nature and poor predisposition of man supplemented Thyona’s attitude and conceptions regarding the same nature. McDonald’s ‘through line’ succumbed to no tendency in reaching the…

The play that my group and I read and presented was Behind Closed Doors, a play with the concept of, Tragedy in your past can affect your present if you do not let go and move on. The role I played was the director, which is a role in the theater, that’s very much so unappreciated. The purpose of the presentation project was to actually understand, hands on, what it takes to produce a Theatre play, and what the jobs and elements are to do so. In theatre, communication is key. Every job works in harmony with one another, and they all need each other to put on an incredible show.…

Events throughout the Act lead to the dramatic tension at the end of act two such as the gradual build up towards the shock of Eric as the father of Eva’s unborn child; Mrs Birling’s swift change form outright confidence to devastation at the end of act two and Eric’s entrance just as Mrs Birling has claimed that the father of Eva’s unborn child should take sole responsibility for the suicide. Priestley creates this dramatic tension at the end of act two in order to set up eager anticipation for the continuance of the action in Act three.…

My name is Demetria Williams and I took this class because I had to. When I signed up for this class I was lead to believe that this was a theater class and not and acting class. On the first day of class the teacher instructed to us that this was an acting class and asked us did we know that. When the teacher told the class this everyone was upset and nervous including me. I told myself that I was just going to make the best of it and do the best I can. After the first week of class I got a little comfortable. The teacher told the class that we were going to have to things like monologues, dialogues, and scenes. I thought to myself this is going to be horrible because I have never done things like this. I felt like the only thing that made it possible to me was that I am not a shy person, and I don’t meet any strangers. The very first thing we had to do was a monologue. I did my monologue on a story called ONE by Terrence Mosely. The story was about an African American woman in the age range of 30-55 who reveals to her grown son the facts about his father. I chose to do this monologue because I can relate to this story. When I did this first monologue I was very nervous, and when I hit the stage I forgot just about every line. Thanks to my teacher he let another class mate kind of guide me through it. I just knew that I had made a bad grade on it, but I did way better than I thought. The second monologue I did was called I ate the divorce papers by Gabriel Davis. This monologue was a little different; it was about a woman with a broken heart that lashes out on her husband in an unusual way about their divorce. I chose this one because I thought it was hilarious and not as a serious character as the first monologue. I did much better on this one I didn’t forget my lines like I did on the first one. I was much more adjusted to my fellow classmates and it made it so much easier on me. Along with…

When the day of the recital came, I was ‘nervcited’: a perfectly even mixture of nervousness and excitement. I walked into the middle school and saw that the people who were playing piano had to sit in the first two rows of seats. Each seat had a name on it in alphabetical order. My teacher came on stage and began the show with a funny introduction to the first act. By the third act, I was sick of waiting! It was nerve-wracking to watch the others play, and sometimes mess up. When Ms. Crossman finally called my name, I thought I was going to puke! I timidly walked down the aisle and up to the piano on the stage.…

The first play I saw for our acting class was the Whipping Man at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. I’m not very familiar with the acting common in theatrical performances, so I may be judging it a bit harshly, but I felt that the acting was actually pretty underwhelming. I’ve become accustomed to more recent actors acting as naturally as they possibly can, so I felt a bit out of place watching these mediocre actors reciting their lines and occasionally raising their voice. It seemed forced and very unnatural. There was no point during the performance in which I forgot that I was watching a play; I was very much aware that I was watching a set of actors throw lines back and forth.…
