On the exterior of the building, Trost decided on a buff terracotta façade that helps to blend the building in with the surrounding scenery.2 The Tuscan-styled Roman hexastyle portico sits on a podium, located in center of the building with rectangular block wings on each side of it.3 The portico is surrounded with six Corinthian styled polylithic columns.4 The columns and most of the façade is pieced together, and is not made of solid concrete.5 The capitals are adorned with helix, acanthus leaves, and a fleuron.6 Past the astragal, we see the shaft is fluted down to the filet, with a torus, scotia, torus, and plinth making up the base.…
Going back to design one, a central courtyard remained as the key element of the scheme (Figure 3.A). With a relatively heavy and organized layout surrounding this space, the courtyard and its pathways aid in breaking up the collected mass and facilitate the transition between spaces. In addition, the reintroduction of curved roofing from design one was used in some places (Figure 3.B). The combination of a scissor truss and curved coverage created a hybrid roofing system for the barn and arena to allow air circulation, while alternatively, a low flat slab roofing system was used for the office and a covered group seating area. These two separate systems were used as such to create a private feeling where it was needed and establish an overall visual distinction between functioning spaces. Lastly, the reuse of walls like in design two continued the creation of private zones and a separation of functions without disturbing the open flow of the design. As expected, there are some weaknesses to report, such…
I chose to create a small art gallery to emphasize on the significance and symbolism of the subject of my space. “Stairs” by Rachel Whiteread was created in 2001 as one of the subject lines in her exhibit of a house called “ghost”. Thus, defining the idea of distance from reality, confusion, the upside down world, plainness, as well as, the psychological aspect that, plays tricks to the naked eye. The purpose of the sculpture is to make you question life with the variety of directional features in the sculpture. The design of my space has been created with an integration of themes by the selected geometric exterior walls and smooth texture. I created the exterior in such way resembles the shape of the stairs. The element…
In rudimentary architecture the human presence can seem subject to the domination of nature. Architecture cannot disengage it self from the natural and human factors, it never do so, it function rather is to bring nature ever close to us. Everything should be on the premise of respect for the natural. And consider…
The River is a song by Jordan Feliz, and it one of my favorite and most influential songs. I first heard it during a Nationals game as Daniel Murphy’s walk-up song. The lyrics are about going to a river to pray, repent, and become born again. As an atheist, I try to avoid being acquainted with religious ideas or opinions, as I believe that religion has become a sensitive issue in many cases nowadays. But after listening to the song a few times, I started to love it, and it soon had a great impact on myself.…
The most impressive part of the design is in its dome, where the complex corners and curves of the plan are pulled upwards like a tent. Standing at the center of the church and looking upwards, it’s beautiful shape is revealed, and the pronounced entablature makes the visitor want to flow around the space, following its shape. The dome is filled with natural light, which elevates the space into a spiritual…
A tipi (also tepee and teepee) is a Lakota name for a conical tent traditionally made of animal skins and wooden poles used by the nomadic tribes and sedentary tribal dwellers (when hunting) of the Great Plains. Tipis are stereotypically associated with Native Americans in general but Native Americans from places other than the Great Plains mostly used different types of dwellings. The term "wigwam" (a domed structure) is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to a tipi.…
At the beginning of the new millennium urban populations outnumbered that of rural populations for the first time in history. Urban areas have long had connotations of being harmful to our environment and the people living in them are often seen as either careless or oblivious in regards to maintaining their surrounding environment; most notably the rivers that flow through their cities. The Trinity River begins in North Texas and flows all the way to the Gulf of Mexico; it flows straight through the largest metropolitan area in the southern United States, Dallas-Fort Worth. The Trinity River along with many other rivers still flowing undeterred through large cities all across the world represent a growing change in the way our culture views nature. Urban cultures around the world have fought to preserve and save the rivers that flow through their cities from being dammed or canalized. Fort Worth is one of these proud cities that stood up to the big businesses and lobbyists to preserve the natural state of their river, the Trinity. Many more major cities such as Los Angeles, California have created urban renewal projects that not only revitalize a dilapidated area of their city but also restore the heavily polluted or channelized rivers near them. In this post-modern era urban rivers like the Trinity are finding common ground between the expansion of urban areas and the preservation of our environment as how it should be; untamed and unpolluted.…
The overall floor plan of the community will resemble that of healthy lung tissue; that is to say, the nine pods containing six individual units will represent the alveoli and the connecting hallways will represent the bronchioles as they breathe clean air and life into the community. These “bronchioles” will work to help connect the peoples of the pods and ultimately…

It is a testament to the celebrated architect, Antoni Gaudi, that one building could be so inspiring in so many ways. He accomplished this end by effectively sampling natural forms. The building is composed of disarming familiar natural forms, but they are arranged in a completely new and surreal way. Furthermore, these forms lend themselves to a myriad of individualized interpretations dependent upon the interpreter. All of this is just the beginning, in my opinion, of what makes Casa Batllo the premier building exemplifying the modernism movement in Barcelona.…
Even though the shape of the building looks a bit funny on the plan, in reality this building looks great, especially with the materiality choice. Glass is the dominant material, and this provides delicateness to the building. Also the lighting that was chosen for the building plays a well role as it illuminates the interior and creates a warm, as well as inviting atmosphere to the building and the surrounding areas. The way Norman placed the columns is very appealing to me. I find it very clean and smooth how he spread the columns equally around its irregular shape. He contrasted symmetry with irregularity, resulting a dynamic, creative…
Robert Venturi was only thirty-four when he was requested by his mother to design and build a house for her. Up until this time all of Venturi’s designs had been mostly theoretical. He was now given a chance to make them concrete.2 It could be understood that Robert’s mother’s house was designed to help him with his career; he was given an opportunity to design and construct a building instead of writing and teaching about them. The Vanna Venturi House was to be Robert Venturi’s first building. Like many architects he was driven to test his ideas through construction.3 The house went through six basic schemes and six models were made to clearly exhibit the form of the house and Venturi’s evolving ideas.4…
