Year Round Schools

April 1, 2016 Could you imagine sitting in a classroom in the summer? You would be sweating and wishing you could be outside playing or swimming. Wouldn’t that be HORRIBLE? If you said yes, you are like me and don’t like year round schooling. Year round schools cost a lot of money and disrupt schedules. Instead of the traditional 9 ½ months in school then a 2 ½ month break, year round schools go 6-9 weeks in school then have a 2-4 week break. In the end though, both types of school go 180 days. One disadvantage of year round school is it costs a lot of money to run a year round school. Some schools are not prepared for summer and need weatherproofing such as sun shades or A/C. Then on top of that you have to pay staff, such as bus drivers, janitors, and teachers to work all that extra time. Some year round schools have extra classes like Harry Potter, Japanese, CPR, and many other classes during the 2-4 week break. Instead of doing repairs in summer while nobody is at school, repairs happen when kids are in school, which can cause many distractions. Students also can’t go to summer camps if they are in class. “Children learn a lot at summer camps and other recreational programs,” said Abhijit Naik in their article Year-round Schools Pros and Cons. Many summer camps are offered by colleges who can only offer camps when they are on summer break. For older students, it may be hard to balance a summer job and go to school. It is also hard to find a job for only a month and a half. If you play sports you might have practice during the break and have to decide to go to practice or be with your family.
