Dead Poets Society Lessons
Watching a movie in class is what every high school student wants. Most people think movies in class are a waste of time and students could be learning a lot more material if teachers did not show movies. Movies are actually a great way to teach students valuable lessons and get them to come to school. Movies have the ability to teach any lesson. They can teach about respect, hard work or many other things. Movies also have the ability to bring people together and in this case bring kids to school. The Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir has the abilities to teach great lessons and allow them to learn about the past. The Dead Poets Society can teach every student that watches the film a great lesson. One of many lessons they can teach …show more content…
I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. To put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived” (Dead Poets Society 1989). This lesson is great because it teaches kids to live life to the fullest. It also teaches them to be themselves and do what they want because you only live once and there is no going back in time to change a person’s decisions. Some people may say that kids can learn this lesson from their teachers in a one minute talk, but this is not true. This is because a lot of students do not listen to their teacher and the things he or she says, but all kids listen to movies and what they have to say. This lessons ties to the next example which is a saying. The saying was first said by Mr. Keating, but it was sayed multiple times by many different characters. The saying is “Carpe diem” (Dead Poets Society). As explained in the movie the saying means to live life to the fullest in the present and don’t think of what will happen in the future. This is very important for high school students to learn because it teaches them to not worry about what colleges they …show more content…
Learning about the past is very important because it allows students to compare to modern day to compare the differences. In the film Dead Poets Society a character by the name of Charlie Dalton decides to make a prank call for the head of Welton academy. Charlie said it was a call from God. This prank did not go over very well with the head of Welton academy. Charlie was taken out right away and was spanked with a wooden paddle. The wooden paddle is a part of history that high school students should learn about. It will teach the students about the major differences between school punishments in the past and the present. The grading was also different in the past. Towards the beginning of Dead Poets Society we are meeting all of the teachers and one of them talks about the grading. The teacher says that each late homework assignment will drop the overall grade of the student one letter. This is another key thing from the past that students need to learn. They need to learn how hard it was to get an A in a class so they stop complaining how hard it is now. Some people may say that it was so hard to get an A for the kids in the movie a Dead poets society because it was the top prep school in the nation. This is wrong because for most schools the lowest possible percentage you could get and still get an A was an around a ninety three percent. Learning about the past is very important and movies are a

Todd has the average inferiority complex. He is a very bright young man with exceptional abilities. Todd is unwilling to speak his mind for fear of non-acceptance. Their English professor, Mr. Keating, radically changes the lives of all of these students. Mr. Keating encourages Todd to speak up and voice his opinions. He makes Todd realize that the world will accept him because his thoughts and feelings are so deep and heartfelt. Charles Dalton receives just the spark he needs for action from Mr. Keating. He reforms a group called the Dead Poets Society. Nothing really happens at the meetings other than the reading of poetry for inspiration in life. Neil, perhaps the most perplexing character in the movie, discovers his dream in life is to be an actor. His father, for a reason none other than love, strongly opposes this career move. History books today are flooded with pointless tasks for memorization, which is just an easy fix to get students a good grade on a test, without them actually retaining the information in the chapter. Not being properly educated on past events gives the future more opportunity for mistakes, considering they will not be able to compare past and present problems in hopes to not make the same mistakes again. It is easy for students to brush off this information because it is taught in such a matter of fact sort of way, not showing any passion, just information does not make a person interested in a subject. When a student can have actual feelings regarding an event, that is when it sticks. When they can really understand what is going on, through real stories and encounters, they have a more thorough understanding of the world and are better prepared to participate in…

History is the study of the past; however, every person’s opinion varies and tends to make history a sore subject. In today’s society the average American knows little to almost nothing when it comes to history. During high school many people have thought of history being not as important as other subjects and put it off to the side. Yet later on in life they have watched a historically based movie or television show and found interest in history. Learning from movies that inaccurately portray history is embarrassing, but it can also motivate people to learn more about the topic.…

Although I don’t agree with these types of schools and feel that they are wasting student’s money, there were three good things that I took out of this film. Mr Keating inspires his students to look at things in different ways and in doing so, asks them to rip out the introduction in their poetry textbooks. Hesitant at first, the classroom is soon filled with the sounds of pages being torn out and excitement amongst the students. The audience soon learns that Mr. Keating is a former student of Welton and tells the boys of the secret club him and his friends were in. Crouched around Mr. Keating, the boys’ faces light up when they learn of the Dead Poets Society. Another scene shows Neil finding Mr. Keating’s old poetry book in his room; the music playing during this scene is the same music playing when Neil commits suicide. This film technique of foreshadowing through the use of music connects the influence of the Dead Poets Society and Neil’s final moments longing for personal freedom. His yearn for individuality results in a fatal outcome-death. The Headmaster, not wanting his school to close because of a suicide, blames Mr. Keating and the Dead Poets Society, and fires him. There is a scene where the boys are arguing over who’s to blame for the whole situation and the camera shot shows Todd in the dark, at the back of the room, but when he stands up for Mr.Keating he moves forward into the light. This is a good use of lighting by the director, it shows Todd, in his quiet, dark, conforming state, coming into the light and expressing…

Movies can be used for just plain entertainment or to convey a message. However, the best movies do both. For that reason it is best to watch a movie like The Fundamentals of Caring. This movie is the story about Trevor a 18 year old boy with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (a debilitating disease that causes skeletal muscles to weaken and break down over time) and his caregiver Ben (a middle aged man who is trying to get his life under control. Together they help each other grow and face their problems head on. Throughout the movie the audience sees a somewhat realistic view of how a person with a physical disability lives their day to day life. The college as a whole should watch The Fundamentals of Caring because it is a heartwarming comedy that shows the audience that to care for someone, you must care for yourself in the process, to appreciate the little things in life,…

Keaton enables the boys to overcome shyness, fall in love, follow your dreams, and create a strong self image. “Seize the day” or in Latin, Carpe Diem, is a theme used throughout the film Dead Poets Society. The English professor, Mr. Keating, uses the quote of “sucking the marrow out of life” to encourage his students to seize every moment the day has to offer and to never waste it. One of Mr. Keating’s students, Charles Dalton, displays Carpe Diem in such a way that it turns out to have negative results. Charles Dalton’s acts of publishing an article in the school newspaper, punching a fellow classmate in the face, and bringing girls to one of the Dead Poets Society meetings are all examples of how he “seizes the day”.…

The movie was quite not new to me since I’ve watched it several times when I was still in high school during our overnight. But I must admit that the impact of this movie to me has never changed from the moment that I personally have watched it. It was a very realistic movie that touched my heart all over again. Indeed, when we are young we really are curious about things and would actually see for ourselves on something. Mr. Keating, the teacher encourages his students to take chances and think outside the box. He is an ideal teacher to me because his purpose of being a teacher is not just to teach them the concepts but to teach them something that could be use for their future. He inspires his students to explore new things for it is indeed in doing so that you get to explore yourself and know your capacities & limitations. Mr. Keating reminds me a lot of my math teacher way back in high school. He is also a very comic but a strict man. Since, I am really poor in math I really refused studying the subject. But when I met this teacher, my outlook towards the subject has changed. He made me realize that if you want to achieve something, you have to do everything that you can so that at the end even if you succeed or fail, you can proudly say that you did your best despite of and you’ll have no regrets. Also, he made me realize that grades are really not what matters most but what you have learned. We have to do our best in every thing that we do all for God’s greater glory. The movie is very suitable for us, teenagers since we are in the stage in finding out who we really are, what we really want and who we want to be. The movie encourages us to be the students who aren’t afraid of taking risks but at the same time with every action that we do we are responsible for it. Comes with the great power to choose for ourselves is also the great responsibility to act accordingly for the betterment of the…
