The french horn and the piano were invented long ago and since then changes have been made to further improve the instruments and make them more suitable for playing music. These instruments are used very differently from each other in music while they both hold key roles. Both instruments are a challenge to learn and to master, and both have unique characteristics that make them difficult to play.…
Composers use elements and characteristics of language to create voice in their texts to shape meaning and affect interpretation of the audience. This is demonstrated by the composers of the following texts; “The life and Crimes of Harry Lavender” composed by Marele Day, the 2010 film “never Let Me Go” directed by Richard Eyre and the novel “Wuthering Heights” composed by Emily Bronte…
Williams’ brilliant compositions elude to the themes of the previous movies, and those connections are in part what makes the pieces so effective in conveying their intended message – whether it be the hope of the force prevailing, or the impending doom when the dark side of the force advances. In tandem, the strength and effectiveness of the musical elements that these themes are made up of makes them so memorable and emotional for the…
“Big Two-Hearted River” and “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” are two stories with different characters and meanings. The stories contain characters named Nick and Alfred Prufrock. Nick appears to be somewhat of a hero in “Big Two-Hearted River.” Biographically, he appears to be the same as the writer, though one should not assume Nick’s character is the author. J. Alfred Prufrock was more of a middle-aged intellectual man who was inclusive and invited readers with him in the modern city. These two characters portray differences, similarities, and represent the Modern man in their own unique ways.…
The texts “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, “Elephant man” the film by David Lynch and “Othello” by William Shakespeare, can all be connected and contrasted by the central concept of alienation as presented by the composers of these texts through the use of various Literary, dramatic and cinematic techniques. Alienation and how effective the text has been in representing this concept can be identified and highlighted by the messages of alienation the composer has presented to their responders.…
The composer wanted to create a memorable Leitmotifs. The music makes me think of a drama that I can picture many of the actions taking place just by listening to the music.…
The movie contains multiple scenes of close-up camera shots, highly emotional scenes and the use of poignant music to emphasize the heightened emotions of the situation. In many scenes where John is speaking with his sick son, the camera is zoomed in to show the particular facial expressions of the characters. As the actors and actresses begin to shed emotional tears of fear and joy, the audience is able to experience the heightened emotional pull on the importance of the scene. The quality actors are able to act in a way that makes the audience believe in the magnitude of the situation. Washington convinces viewers as he immerses himself in the role and communicates an exceptional believability through communicating with the doctors, administrators and even his own wife. Finally, the director utilizes the power of music to express the heightened emotions surrounding the situation. For instance, in the first scene classical music is playing in the car of a woman as she performs dangerous turns in her car while driving.…
Baz Luhrmann’s film interpretation of Act 5 scene 3 of Romeo and Juliet conveys the tragedy of the play more effectually than Zefrelli’s. This is because Baz Luhrmann has made more effective use of film elements to fully capture the heart-breaking nature of the scene. Such as; colour and lighting props and the setting he staged the scene in, the actors and the way the events in the scene unfolded. Zefrelli’s interpretation of the play was undoubtedly moving, Baz Luhrmann’s more modern adaption allows the viewers to experience the full force of the tragedy.…
These days our artistic landscape is so deeply defined by visual narratives on TV and in the movies that we can hardly imagine a world without images. Sometimes quality is judged solely based on a stories actions. In this image drenched society we sometimes struggle to appreciate and celebrate books and movies where the quality arises not exclusively from plot but also from the language and characters itself. The novel The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger and the movie Stand by Me directed by Rob Reiner are examples of having uninteresting story line concepts but involving beautifully executed details. The Catcher in the Rye is about a teenager retelling the time when he spent three days in New York and Stand by Me is about a man retelling a story of when he and his friends walked on a railroad track for two days trying to find a dead body. But the weight isn’t in what you see; it’s in what you feel. The Catcher in the Rye and Stand By Me have both stood the test of time, and remain one of those rare pieces of art that show no rust from age. The densely woven human emotion portrayed by the characters, richness of structural design, and impacting ending resolution, are the reasons why these great pieces of art will never lose their relevance.…
The film Othello by director Oliver Parker, is based on the Shakespearean tragedy based on the insecurities of one man, being played upon leading to his undoing at the hands of the one he most trusts, ?honest Iago?. In this essay, we look at how this age old play is dealt with by the medium of film, reviewing the director?s ability to provide an effect caused by insight into the play?s mechanization and interpretation of such affected by visual mastery. This analysis focuses mainly on techniques and devices used to achieve this and their effect.…
* The theme of love is still evident through our adaptation. This is shown through the medium shot used, which lets the audience see hand actions, whilst also seeing the facial expressions between the two lovers, where we are seen their expressed emotions.…
In both visual and written texts, love operates as a powerful and inescapable force, which can influence life in various ways. In Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ love is represented as a forbidden romantic experience which ultimately ends in tragedy. Wayne Bennet represents a love of life in his autobiography, ‘Don’t Die With the Music in You’, through the exploration of his love for football and coaching. Finally, Baz Luhrman represents love in the film ‘Moulin Rouge’ as a romantic force that can conquer all things. This essay will argue that whilst these three texts represent diverse forms of love, the message that love is a powerful and inescapable force is ultimately evident in all texts.…
Bill Viola (1951–), a contemporary video artist whose upbringing capitalizes on his interpretation of the world: seen and unseen. In a near death encounter, Viola’s comprehensive reaction to the memories of his near-drowning seems to be a driving force in many of his artworks. Of many of the video pieces, most, if not all, have spiritual significance and pull away from reality; pushing the theme of transcendence and imagination. As suggested by Bernier, “Viola considers the re-emergence of a theological dimension to contemporary art, a re-enchantment of art”. Though instituted by feelings and imagination, Viola interprets the senses of the natural world by means of re-converging theology and physicality through sound and image, that, seem…
In order to motivate or persuade an audience to take action, a text must appeal to the ears as much as to the eyes. Throughout the film called “The Piano”, directed by Jane Campion, Symbolisms and the use of Sounds are applied to the film to influence the audience to understand the film more.…
Melody was used to deliver the mood, energy, and feelings through tempo and rhyme. The use of literary devices such as metaphor, was to exaggerate the significance of love. Additionally, I collaborated with an expertise when filming my music video; a director, to help capture many footages at different angles. Therefore, collaborating with this new partner, we made technological decisions upon which scenery and style to follow. I had to present my ideas with good articulation and clear opinions, being willing to accept any…
