Civil Rights Reflection
This student is an 18 year old white male in the twelfth grade. He represents a majority of his classmates in his race and economic status of lower-middle class. Throughout this semester, I have noticed that this student does not seem to grasp underlying messages of text. He takes his reading very literally and is unable to identify elements of figurative language. I believe this inability stems from his learning disabilities. Most of his classmates are able to read the text from the author’s point of view to develop a claim that the author is trying to portray to the audience. This student, however, has been unable to read past the surface level of the text to develop claims of the text. We have spent previous lessons reading informational text about the Civil Rights’ Movement to understand the idea of equality during the time period. …show more content…

Kennedy. People are not as educated as they should be on the Civil Rights Movement.     During my observation at Oak Park Middle, I observed a 7th grade Social Studies class. Most children n the classes I observed had African-American students. Two classes had to Hispanic girls. There was 31 boys and 13 girls all together in the three hours of classes I observed. The boys always greatly outnumbered the girls in the classes. I believe the students all came from similar socioeconomic background. The teacher was an African-American male. He had great control over his classroom and was able to connect with the children. He had a bellringer for them the first day I observed. The first and third class were quite rowdy when they came in and the teacher had to make them sit down and start their assignment. The second class was much more focused and sat down to their work with barely any instruction. The second observation I did, the students had to do a free write activity. The teacher was always helpful and explained the assignment thoroughly to the students before they started.…

    In total there are fifteen laws that count towards the topic of civil rights in the United States, alone. Kenji Yoshino, author of “The New Civil Rights” says that in order for us to turn our current beliefs into a set of ‘new’ civil rights, law must play a role. Obvious enough, law alone cannot bring about a new set of civil rights. There are more than enough pieces that could make up this puzzle. For instance, media plays a huge role in this situation. The media only shows what they want us, the people, to see. If we only see what they want us to see then wouldn’t that leave us very narrow-minded? The media adds irrelevant detail to every situation. For example, a person’s race, which otherwise makes no difference, could be the topic of discussion while a news crew covers a crime. Another component to solving this dilemma is spreading word of a new set of civil rights to the next generation starting at a young age.     I grew up in Charleston Illinois for the most part of my life. My family was middle class and was made up of 3 brothers and 2 sisters. I put a lot of emphasis on class when thinking of my background and how prepared I have been for things in life. Usually this indicates that I am less aware of class; but since I have already gotten my bachelors in Sociology, I have studied class and am very aware of differences in class and how they can help or handicap an individual. Also, historically, students from middle class have a good work ethic with confidence in academics. Because of this I am more able to work “the system” to get things I want. Curtis is from a lower class family, mom was a single parent, where he has 2 sisters. He puts a whole lot of emphasis on his class and believes it to be a huge disadvantage. Like most people from lower class backgrounds, he believes that he is not capable of getting good grades and getting a better (higher paying) job than his mom. Although he says he wasn’t that much lower class, but he feels disadvantage, which has subsequently turned him to being paranoid of the government. He is very liberal in his belief system due to this. When teaching I will need to make sure and instill confidence in all my students, teach them that they can achieve anything and everything with hard work.…
