7th Grade Social Studies Class Observation
During my observation at Oak Park Middle, I observed a 7th grade Social Studies class. Most children n the classes I observed had African-American students. Two classes had to Hispanic girls. There was 31 boys and 13 girls all together in the three hours of classes I observed. The boys always greatly outnumbered the girls in the classes. I believe the students all came from similar socioeconomic background. The teacher was an African-American male. He had great control over his classroom and was able to connect with the children. He had a bellringer for them the first day I observed. The first and third class were quite rowdy when they came in and the teacher had to make them sit down and start their assignment. The second class was much more focused and sat down to their work with barely any instruction. The second observation I did, the students had to do a free write activity. The teacher was always helpful and explained the assignment thoroughly to the students before they started.
During my first observation the teacher set up a Jeopardy game for the students to play to review all they had learned so far that year. The students were separated into three groups and had to work together in their group to pick and answer a question. The first class got into an argument and he stopped the game to talk to them about working together

When I first entered the school the secretary helped me and brought me to the correct classroom with a smile and a good and professional attitude. When I met the teacher he was dressed professionally and was very welcoming into his classroom. He had great control over his classroom and every child respected him and listened to everything he had to say. The children would come in the classroom loud and he would settle them down and start them on their assignment.     They face unstable home environments and come in having lower than average reading and math scores. I feel at my elementary school in Augusta, GA, we were, for the most part, set up for success. The majority of us came from a stable military or middle-class family backgrounds were our families were not rich and were not poor either. There was a diverse group of students, with the majority being African American and the minority majority being Caucasian. At Jamestown Elementary I do not remember having remedial classes or one on one sessions for struggling students. I believe overall, students at Jamestown Elementary came in having some idea of the basics of entry level education. This made a large difference when it came to teaching and allowed us to progress further and not backtrack. On the other hand, Williams Elementary seems to be plagued by negative socioeconomic factors the student’s family’s face, which deteriorate the overall entry level education level of students. With students who are farther behind from the beginning, it can be challenging to make progress for proficient scores.     During this observation I was able to shadow a friend of mine who now teaches 10th grade history. When I arrived at this school it looked like a regular high school yet it was very different. On this particular day, there were 2 administrators at the main entrance greeting students encouraging them to be excited about the coming school day.     There was an older adult that told them to stop arguing and pick up the food. They then argued over who should pick it up. So, I came over and asked them, who was going to be the bigger person and they both raced to pick it up first. This showed how these students wanted to be treated like adults.     I have previously observed at schools, but did not have to keep democratic standards or their race and ethnicity into consideration. In having to think about a democratic environment, I got to focus on more things other than just the curriculum being taught and whether I liked how the seats were set up. I actually really enjoyed shadowing Mrs. C, since I felt I could relate to her Hispanic students due to me being the same ethnicity.     Poorer residential areas in America are more likely to be located in the inner cities across the nation. Since most of the funding for schools comes from property taxes, those living in poor areas of the nation must also attend schools that lack the money and government funding that would otherwise help urban children receive an equal education as those who attend rural and suburban schools. The lack of money at these schools causes shortages on books, offered classes, extracurricular activities, and qualified teachers (2). The teachers may be new or lack the proper knowledge to teach.
