The article Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie tell us the meaning of the reading. Explain how an Indian child developed his reading skills at young age. The article says "My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well" (1). We can infer that he wanted to be as his father. They were fan of reading.…
In the short story "Superman and Me", the author, Sherman Alexie talks about how he came about helping Native American children become educated. He detail’s about his life growing up on a Native American reservation with a limited supply of education. He taught himself how to read, and through the abundant supply of books from his father he became an “oddity” for being a prodigy. The author repeats the phrase, “I was trying to save my life” but later on he changes it to, “I am trying to save our lives.” The point of “Superman and Me” is not to tell the story of how Alexie became a writer or how he learned read, it is about how he is trying to change the lives of Native American children. Ever since white settlers forced Native Americans onto…
First and foremost, because of my past experience with being a ruler over other countries I feel I can become a dynamic and competent absolute ruler of Nacirema. They way that I will be an absolute ruler is because I have centralized the government in my recent nations by enacting many of the laws. Another reason why I will fit the position of governing a country by myself is, I will have complete power over…
Batman all started with his bat phobia stemming from a childhood accident. He picks his own most-feared creature and turns it on his enemies; eventually he would make himself stronger by facing his fears. Batman maiden name was Bruce Wayne. Witnessing the murder of his mother and father as a child lead to him training his self to fight crime. Bruce decided to become Batman at the age of 25, and soon after that came the first Robin who name is Dick. Dick was only 12 years old. Bruce took Dick under his swing and showed him how to be a man.…
In 1949 Joseph Campbell created a theory in literature and movies abroad which he named, the Hero’s Journey. This was a pattern Campbell saw that most plots followed. The pattern consisted of the main protagonist originally living in the ordinary world, going into the abyss, experiencing rebirth and transformation, eventually returning to their normal world. You can see the stages of the ordinary world, the call to adventure, and the trials all in the movie The Dark Knight.…
The film Waiting For Superman is a film directed by Davis Guggenheim that talks about the public school system in the United States. This film uncovers the many ways in which education in America has declined. learns the struggles America has to find good teachers who are willing to motivate students and give them the push and motivation that they need to excel and succeed in primary school.…
The superhero universe is one that is vast and complex. Although my passion is helping others, if I could switch places with a superhero or villain of my choosing, I wouldn't hesitate to select a villain. More specifically, I would pick Harley Quinn. Although ostensibly, Harley is an obsessed psychopath who goes to great lengths just for her significant other, the Joker, her character goes much deeper. Harley, unlike most superheroes and villains, who are simply concerned with world domination or saving the world as a whole, is aware of social issues that are brought up today. For example, in one episode of the Batman television show, a police asks Harley to read him his rights in a sexual context, and she proceeds to teach him a lesson. Harley…

Though when most people think of superheroes they think of the type with super powers, the original idea of the superman' was developed by Friedrich Nietzsche in the 1800s. The ubermensch (literally overman in German) never had extra-ordinary powers and wasn't developed as the protector of man. Instead, the superman is a person who has overcome all the flaws of mankind and is essentially perfect.' This idea, though it was thought of as an ideal goal that all people should strive for, has almost completely been used for less-than-good agendas. The details of what Nietzsche's superman is supposed to be and how that compares with how it was used to the advantage of many dictatorships and other oppressive leaders is amazing and in many ways…
In the United States there are over 2,000 dropout factories. These are high schools with a very high number of dropouts. Making sure all students receive the best education and excel in school has been a problem for a long time. Presidents after presidents have promised change in the education system and have signed documents in hopes it would make a difference, but there has been very minimal change. In the documentary “Waiting for Superman,” David Guggenheim stresses the importance of improvement of the current education system. He presents the issue by using the three appeals, the organization of the film, and cinematic techniques. With all of this, Guggenheim was able to create a strong argument on this issue with the education system of America. After watching this film, it was very clear that there needs to be change. It will take a very long time to fix the damage that has been done, but it will not only take time, but money, research, and most importantly the motivation and willpower to make the change.…
What is the significance of being a hero? In Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, I would like to address the theme of rebirth and its relevance to Batman. Batman’s rebirth can be seen through, his physical changes, superhero power struggle, and his death.…
The documentary “waiting for Superman” deals with children with different backgrounds desperately trying with all their strength to become accepted into a charter school because the public school system is failing. The parents of the children are doing the best that they can to save them from the potential failure they could face in public schools. This reminded me of my parents, because they did all they could to get me into the charter school that I now attend, and I admit that before I did not want to enter it at all, but after I realized the chance I had and I loved it.…
I am interested in studying film because of the impact it has had on my life personally. When I was twelve years old, I watched Davis Guggenheim’s documentary Waiting for Superman (2010). This film explored the gaps that are within the American public school system and how many people are “left behind”. At the end of the film I was in tears. I felt that it was unfair that many children were not receiving a quality education. This film not only inspired me to become a documentary filmmaker, but it made me passionate about social issues such as education inequality, whether within America or abroad. I was always interested in the production aspect of film, but it was not until my junior year of high school in my IB Film class that I became interested…
The following essay is about the popular culture icon, Superman, and how a Superhero with immense power can control one’s self. Superman started off with a grim background with the destruction of his home world and the loss of his new father on earth leaving him only with his earth mother. Having not a single person to relate to can leave a person lonely, meaning that superman was alone for a while even though he had a mother to care for him, Superman had no one that could relate to him. What Superman also teaches those who look up to him that people should not give into temptation and should, instead, stick to their moral values because someone cannot be themselves if they do not do what they believe to be right.…
