According to Centers Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Cigarette smoking causes about one of every five deaths in the United States each year. It is estimated to cause more than 480,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke).” Many people start smoking in their teens because of peer pressure, personal issues and media influences. In addition, most of them are addicted to cigarettes by the time they are adults. Smoking is related to many different negative effects that most people are not actually aware of. According to CDC, “Secondhand smoke is smoke from burning tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. It is also the smoke that has been exhaled, or breathed out, by the person smoking. There is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure; even brief exposure can be harmful to health.” Children and infants are the most vulnerable victims to secondhand smoke, because their lungs still are developing. From my own experience, I remembered that my body felt very uncomfortable while my father was smoking at our house. For instance, the smoke irritates my eyes and my nose becomes very sensitive because of the smell of the cigarette.
Finally, smoking is expensive and time-wasting. Let’s say you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, at $8 a pack, that means you’re blowing $8 a day, $56 a week and approximately $2912 a year on smoking.
