Case Assignment Week #2

Case Study 1:

Job Candidate Assessment Tests Go Viral:

1.The advantages of using virtual tryouts are better-qualified candidates; faster recruiting, lower turnover among employees hired, allows candidates to have a more realistic job preview, and makes candidates feel like they are being chosen for the position on more than just their personalities or how they performed during the interview. The disadvantages are a candidate that a company wishes to hire decides after the virtual tryout that it’s not a right fit for them, and the purchase price of the simulation software.

2. The only issue would be whether the virtual tryout simulation system is designed for different positions within the company. I can see an issue is they have a potential candidate performing a virtual tryout and it doesn’t pertain to the actual position that they are interviewing for.

3. Virtual job tryouts are better suited for some jobs than others. As long as the company tailor the virtual jobs simulations system for different types of positions. I do not see it working to assess construction or cooking type positions though.

Firstly, Alejandro’s team members did not view him as an authentic leader. They had no respect for or confidence in him probably because they sensed his self doubt so they disregarded his plan and did not pay attention. Secondly, Dan answered his phone and left for his weekly tennis game which everyone seemed to know about except Alejandro. As soon as the other team members saw that Dan wasn’t interested enough to participate in the meeting, they also lost all interest and followed through with the disrespect because they viewed Alejandro’s plan as just another idea so they began to come up with a plan of their own. Alejandro’s first mistake was that he had no confidence in himself. For example, when Dan initially assigns him with the task, he began to doubt himself and questions the reasons why Dan chose him rather than the “old hands” with more experience. This shows that he wasn’t aware of his strengths and weaknesses so he was unable to present his plan effectively and confidently. Additionally, Alejandro failed to get the other managers involved in his plan to help motivate the other team members.…

The hiring process is difficult enough without the added pressure of Title VII looming over the employer. The employer will look at the applicant 's skills, education, job history, and if the employee will fit with the organization 's culture. The hiring manager will also look at personality, attitude toward work, and future upward mobility. A good personality is important because if the applicant is hired, the applicant will have to work with a diverse group of people. A good attitude toward work is always a good sign as most potential employers look for applicants that will want to work and like to work. Another good sign is if the applicant has future upward mobility that will help the potential employee grow with the company. The employer may call references to see what type of worker the applicant may be and if the applicant had good attendance. In the simulation, the company targeted applicants, both male and female, who were young and "thought" young. The company also wanted applicants who could "unleash sheer male power" (University of Phoenix, 2010). Interviewers must be careful to avoid violating any employment laws, especially Title VII. The hiring decision cannot be based upon the applicant 's religion, race, nationality, age, or gender. In the simulation, the human resources manager had five applicants to consider for the two jobs of Creative Supervisors. The HR manager used a point scale based upon…
