Cartoons and Kids’ Behavioral Problems
One of the problems we face today with kids, is their hyperactivity, swinging modes, early maturity, using bad language, being stubborn, aggressive and violent. According to lots of researches and from parental point of view it could be said that one of the main reasons of children’s psychological and misbehavior is what they watch on TV. TV can glue kids for hours in front of it, and it’s usually without supervision. Cartoons are the most frequent and easily accessible source of entertainment which we provide to our kids. Children form their personality in their early years and up to 7, and in these years of their life their lives they spend a lot of time watching cartoons. In this research we will study some of the messages the daily TV cartoons convey to our kids, and how they affect the formation of their personality, their habits and how it causes psychological problems for them. The first bad effect of cartoons is that it drags kids into a fantasy world that does not exist, and children cannot differentiate between what is real and what is not. Today in many cartoons we see the characters jumping, diving, and falling from heights, then landing without being harmed. Cartoon characters always survive these actions which is an unrealistic message to children who might believe that when you hurt or kill someone they would remain unharmed. It encourages aggressiveness and anti-social behavior, and violence and makes them insensitive to victims of violence. This damages the children because they cannot tell the difference between real life and fiction. We have heard and read a lot about kids who tried to imitate spider man and superman and caused serious injuries to themselves and in some cases it led to their death.
