United States Border Patrol
The United States Border Patrol is the largest law enforcement agency within the Department of Homeland Security. The Border Patrol is a group of highly trained officers that detect , and prevent the illegal entry or smuggling of aliens into the United States. Can you imagine the United States without any border protection? The U.S probably may be an obnoxious place to live in. In my point of view, the world would be a total chaos without the Border Patrol. Drugs would be seen more often, as well as narcotics, and many other things too. The United States Border Patrol’s mission is to protect the boundaries of the United States by preventing, detecting, and apprehending illegal aliens, weapons, and terrorists from entering the United States. In the book, “ Border Patrol Agent” by E.P. Steinberg, states that the Border Patrol offers challenges, variety of experiences, and excitement along with an opportunity to serve the community and the nation. In addition, the career as an agent offers job security, good pay, benefits, and an opportunity for advancement. For all theses various reasons, Federal law enforcement careers are highly sought after, and entry into the field is extremely competitive. The U.S. Border Patrol is looking for people interested in preventing weapons, drugs, and undocumented aliens from entering into the United States; and apprehending those people found to be in violation of the immigration laws. Unlike other jobs, there are requirements which you have to meet. To begin with, applicants must be under the age of forty unless they are a qualified Veteran candidate. Secondly, without doubt, you have to be a U.S. Citizen and resident of the United States. Then, you have to be able to learn the spanish language or speak it fluently. Also, you have to possess a valid state driver’s license. Finally, like any other job you have to pass through a background investigation, medical examination, as well as a drug test. In addition to these test, you have to pass through a fitness test and a physical fitness test- two. Some of these tests you have to take them at an academy. The U.S Border Patrol Academy is located in Artesia, New Mexico. All newly hired Border Patrol Agents receive their basic law enforcement skills by attending the USBP Academy, which is fifty-eight days. The academy is like a bootcamp that consists of instruction in integrated law, physical training, firearms instruction, and driving. In addition, agents not fluent in the spanish language must also complete an extra forty-day Task-Based Language Training program. Integrated law is broken down into five separate courses, and to be successful in the courses the tester has to attain at least a seventy percent. The first one, the Nationality Law course, consists of learning to tell whether the person being questioned is an alien, a U.S Citizen, or a national of the United States. Secondly, an Immigration Law course, which is composed of the learning of verifying the classification of aliens, determine the legality of status, recognize violations, and initiate the appropriate action. Next, an Applied Authority course, which teaches the basic intern to recognize violations of Federal criminal statutes and either take appropriate action, with regard to laws under Department of Homeland Security purview, or make referral to another Federal agency of primary jurisdiction. In addition, it also instructs the primary statutes, implementing regulations and court decisions from which an agent produces his or her authority to act in any situation encountered. Finally, there is courses Operations One and Two, which are nearly the same. Operation One is based on tasks that agents perform in the field. Operation Two, are practical labs so that trainees can experience hands-on training to make the curriculum seem real. Physical condition is very important in...
