When I read an article about Amanda Todd’s story, I was shocked and felt how no girl should go through the sexual harassment and cyberbullying that Amanda experienced. Amanda was manipulated to flash her bare chest to a stranger in a video chat room, when she was in seventh grade. The same stranger haunted her through social media by creating fake accounts, and blackmailing her with the picture of her bare chest for years. I seriously cannot imagine the amount of terror and pain Amanda felt through those threats and comments. She cut herself, started using drugs, and finally ended her life in 2012 because she can’t handle the pressure and frustration. It is not right to harass an individual based on their appearance, beliefs, race, color, gender. It is not right to insult an individual in a platform that their family, friends, and all the circles they are associated with can see. It is not right for the victims to feel terrorized and embarrassed by hateful text messages, hacked social media accounts, and disturbing pictures. It is not right for the victims to end their lives.
Even though social networking sites have set up settings that prevent cyberbullying, parents and teachers should educate teens and youth to prevent them from being victims. Internet security systems should be upgraded to optimize the safety of teen youth. There should be an effective support group for cyberbullying victims that can help them overcome their trauma. Media and the news should emphasize the adverse effects of cyberbullying and ways a teen can prevent themselves from being a victim to it.
