What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society? -Ageism is discrimination or prejudice against people of specific ages, especially in employment (Bing dictionary). -Ageism is discrimination and to discriminate against someone for who or what they are is totally going against diversity. Diversity allows us to all be individuals and still live happily. When people are targeted because of the year they were born this causes them to feel left out. A common misunderstanding about diversity is that only certain persons or groups are included. In truth, each and every attribute of an individual is encompassed in diversity. Everyone has a unique perspective that is defined and shaped by many experiences and influences (thehumanequation.com).
What is the Age Discriminitation in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population? - The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 prohibits employment discrimination against persons 40 years of age or older. The Older Workers Benefit Protection Act (Pub. L. 101-433) amended several sections of the ADEA. In addition, section 115 of the Civil Rights Act of 1991 (P.L. 102-166) amended section 7(e) of the ADEA (29 U. S.C. 626(e)) (www.eeoc.gov). -The ADEA addresses issues by promoting employment of older people based on their ability rather than age; to prohibit arbitrary age discrimination in employment; to help employers and workers find ways of meeting problems arising from the impact of age on employment (www.eeoc.gov)
What is being done to address the issues you identified?
-Undertaking research, and promote research, with a view to reducing barriers to employment of older persons, and the promotion of measures for utilizing their skills. -Make available to employers, professional societies, the various media of communication, and other interested persons the findings of studies and other materials for the promotion of employment. -Develop facilities of public and private agencies for expanding the opportunities and potentials of older people. -Sponsor and assist state and community informational and educational programs. -Made it unlawful to limit or classify employees in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s age -Unlawful to refuse to hire or to discharge any individual or otherwise discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment, because of the individual’s age.
Is the number of aging population expected to rise in numbers or decrease? The number of aging population is expected to rise in numbers. This is due to the aging baby boom generation. The first among this generation recently reached retirement age in 2011, and the last will hit retirement age in 2029. In 2009 there were 39.6 million people over the age of 65 in the United States. By 2030 the number is expected to increase to 72.1 million, accounting for 19% of the U.S. population. By 2050, the United Nations estimates that the elderly population of the world will double, from 7.6% to 16.2%. It will become difficult to care for this increasing number of elderly dependents with a dwindling workforce.
