How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population? - The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 prohibits employment discrimination against persons 40 years of age or older. The Older Workers Benefit Protection Act (Pub. L. 101-433) amended several sections of the ADEA. Is the number of aging population expected to rise in numbers or decrease? The number of aging population is expected to rise in numbers. This is due to the aging baby boom generation. The first among this generation recently reached retirement age in 2011, and the last will hit retirement age in 2029. In 2009 there were 39.6 million people over the age of 65 in the United States. By 2030 the number is expected to increase to 72.1 million, accounting for 19% of the U.S. population. By 2050, the United Nations estimates that the elderly population of the world will double, from 7.6% to 16.2%. It will become difficult to care for this increasing number of elderly dependents with a dwindling workforce.
