Title: Heredity Lab
Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to determine what kind of offspring two things will have when combining the genotype.
Introduction
Heredity and genes play a big part in who you are and how you develop. Understanding genetics and how it factors in to everyday life is very important. In this lab we will be determining the dominant traits and the recessive traits and the results on their offspring. There are a lot of different components to factor in when studing genetics. We need to understand how the traits are transferred from one parent to the other. Chromosomes carry the information to create traits and they are inherited from both parents equally.
Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
I think that the results of this experiment will show that the “P” being the more dominant gene will prevail.
Methods
The first step would be to first determine which traits are the dominant traits (P) and which are the recessive traits (p). Then you will take one and divide on each side. On one side you’ll have ½ sperm and ½ egg. Then you will take one of each and match it with the trait on the opposite side. One side will show ¼ PP which is the dominant trait. Then you’ll match ½ P with ½ p which will equal ¼ Pp. You will continue these same steps on the bottom portion of the chart: ½ p to ½ P equals ¼ pP. Then you will match ½ P to ½ p which will equal ¼ pp.
Results/Outcome
The results show that in this case the traits are equally split. The graph shows that even with ¼ pP and ¼ Pp, they are still equal.
