Why Community Service Is Important
Do you feel community service is important to a community? Why or why not? Explain your answer in two or three paragraphs.
Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. One of my favorite things about community service is that there are opportunities and choices everywhere! You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you 'd like or have time for.
Since I was young I have always volunteered for my Catholic Youth Group. At first I didn 't know many people there and wasn 't very enthusiastic. Later, as I got to know the other kids and starting pushing myself to join in the activities, I learned to enjoy and relish my time there. Some activities we did was decorating the nursing home for Christmas, singing carols, writing letters to the residents, and just sitting there visiting and listening to what they had to share. I have realized how important the elderly are to our society and I truly appreciate the advice they gave me. It was a very rewarding experience and I got to do many things I wouldn 't have had an opportunity to do otherwise.
As I move through life I think I will always be involved in community service. Not just because I think it is important but because it is something I enjoy and look forward to. I love bringing joy and through community service I feel I can accomplish that.
If this scholarship application is to be evaluated based on financial need, explain how plan to pay for your college expenses.
I plan on paying for college through student loans and hopefully through scholarships I receive. I am a part of a large family – eight children- with a limited income. I live on a family ranch 40 miles out of town and my parents don’t have the income to pay me or pay my gas to drive into town to get a job. I was afraid that attending a university would be out of my financial reach. I was not even sure where

My youth group leader instilled the importance of community service in me at a young age. Youth group is where I have done the majority of my community service projects. One of my favorite projects was the grocery bandits. My Wednesday night class encouraged the church to bring in groceries to make a Thanksgiving meal out of. We ended up being able to make several full boxes of groceries. My class delivered these boxes anonymously to families in the community that were struggling. I believe that community service is a great thing, but being able to do it without taking credit for it takes real courage. I’ve also volunteered at a homeless shelter/food storehouse twice with my youth group. Other community service projects that I’ve done include: cleaning an elderly ladies house, cleaning another elderly ladies yard gathering supplies to take to the battered…

Lastly, being part of this community service it is a great opportunity to become active in community. It allows me to grow and apply what I learned. On my opinion, volunteers could gain professional experience and could test out the career. Based on my experienced, even I spend a little much time to do my community service, I enjoyed volunteering in the facility. Those hidden talents that I never knew, I used it to experience new and discovered a lot of…

Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I volunteer and participate with the Junior Meteorology Club of Elena L. Christian Junior High School. I help with certain fundraisers such as; bake sales, car washes and collecting donations. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving person. I also volunteered at the Agriculture Fair of 2010. I was helping out the Virgin Islands Police Department booth, assisting the police cadets, police officers, lieutenants and as well as the commissioner. Both my mom and I, we donated funds for Haiti at the VIPD in Frederiksted.…

I volunteer in my community whenever I get the opportunity. For example, I helped students get to school safely and I helped out around the school. I volunteered at the public library to help younger children. I now see it is hard work to get children focused and help them not make a big mess, but I enjoyed helping them in any way I can. Volunteering at the public library also taught me about patience. Not everything went exactly how I planned it out, but at the end it still worked out. My time at the library also taught me about effort.…

Volunteering has driven me to becoming a better person. It has taught me essential life skills that will follow my footsteps for the rest of my life. I volunteer to give back to a community that has given me so much. The opportunities I have received throughout my life has given me motivation to be involved in my community. I am grateful for the help I received from others. I have always been challenged by members of my community to go above and beyond the expectations. My biggest community activity is for Special Olympics of New Jersey. My family and I attend many of the events for SONJ including the Summer Games. I started volunteering by working and playing with the athletes. The area we staffed was where the athletes came to take a break and play with carnival-like games. The ages ranged from little kids to adults. It was fun putting smiles on their faces when you told them they won! It showed me we aren’t any different than them. They still like to do sports and have fun. They love to win prizes as do we. They just have disabilities that make them special. Over all volunteering for SONJ is a fantastic experience and in my opinion every boy and…

When I was younger, I participated in Girl Scouts where we volunteered in food pantries, senior centers, hospitals, animal shelters and charities for the less fortunate. We also participated in service projects such as making cards for veterans, making blankets for hospitals and the homeless, and made care packages for veterans and the hurricane victims. Volunteering is important to me because I had an aunt that unfortunately died of cancer and I feel that no one should have to go through the pain and suffering that she did.…

The years I spent in middle school and high school have opened my eyes to the field of Social Work. I volunteered whenever I got the chance. I was in Student Council and from that, I donated a lot of my time to help with that and other organizations. Throughout those years, I was rewarded my senior year with an award for the most community service hours. My father works for the Michigan State Police, and through him, I volunteered with a lot of organizations through NCRESA. Halloween Hallow, Santa’s story book, and Kids Day were all different events that I volunteered for an absolutely loved. Now, I am a junior and I have still kept busy with volunteering. My freshmen year, taking SW100, we were required to do 15 hours of community service. I volunteered my 15 hours at the Marquette Jacobetti Veterans Center. Volunteering there has very much impacted my life. Whenever I went to see the veterans I was so thankful to them. Listening to their stories has been one of my favorite volunteer memories. In fact, my older sister Jennifer and I are thinking about going and talking to the volunteer coordinator to see if we can come back and continue. Another activity is Northern’s Make a Difference Day which has always been a great experience. Seeing how grateful those who we raked yards for were was truly wonderful. I will continue with Make a Difference Day! My sophomore year, I signed up through NMU’s volunteer center…

Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

I used to go every summer to programs in the city parks and every morning we would clean the community for example going around the block picking up trash. For us it was a competition, since those who picked up the most trash would receive a price. During middle school I was also doing community service but not as much anymore since playing sports took most of my time. But once in a while I would volunteer for the Houston Food Bank, packing food packs for those in need. During high school I became the President of one of the organizations called The Humane Club. In this organizations, the other officers and I, would gather different students from the school and gave them community hours if they would go out with us and clean out the communities. We would all go out into the community and paint houses of people who were already old, we would cut their yards, and do any hard work they couldn’t do due to their…

I've volunteered in a number of places and many events, but the one's that have left an impact on me is my time spent at The Women's safe house and Guardian Angels shop and food pantry. They both helped my family through the crisis of leaving my abusive father financially, emotionally, and physically. At the Woman safe house I couldn't help but see the kids and teenager that I was babysitting and see myself in there place and I quickly became that mentor I and help them see past the darkness and into their bright futures. I wanted to give back to the guardian angels for helping us with clothes and food so now I help run their thrift shop and work as the secretary during pantry day.
