Week 4 Notes and Study Guide
The United States and other industrial economies have gone through periods of fl uctuations in real GDP, employment, and the price level. Although they have certain phases in common—peak, recession, trough, expansion—business cycles vary greatly in duration and intensity.
2. Although economists explain the business cycle in terms of underlying causal factors such as major innovations, productivity shocks, money creation, and fi nancial crises, they generally agree that changes in the level of total spending are the immediate causes of fl uctuating real output and employment.
3. The business cycle affects all sectors of the economy, though in varying ways and degrees. The cycle has greater effects on output and employment in the capital goods and durable consumer goods industries than in the services and nondurable goods industries.
4. Economists distinguish between frictional, structural, and cyclical unemployment. The full-employment or natural rate of unemployment, which is made up of frictional and structural unemployment, is currently between 4 and
5 percent. The presence of part-time and discouraged workers makes it diffi cult to measure unemployment accurately.
5. The GDP gap, which can be either a positive or a negative value, is found by subtracting potential GDP from actual
GDP. The economic cost of unemployment, as measured by the GDP gap, consists of the goods and services forgone by society when its resources are involuntarily idle. Okun’s law suggests that every 1-percentage-point increase in unemployment above the natural rate causes an additional
2 percent negative GDP gap.
6. Infl ation is a rise in the general price level and is measured in the United States by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
When infl ation occurs, each dollar of income will buy fewer goods and services than before. That is, infl ation reduces the purchasing power of money.
7. Unemployment rates and infl ation rates vary widely
globally.

Financial planning is the steps or goals used by a company to accomplish financial goals and prepare for future projects or investments. Starbucks has to have a very detailed financial plan in place especially when planning to expand internationally. When conducting business internationally there are some risk factors that do not apply when conducting domestic business. Starbucks has to first consider foreign exchange rates, political climates and events, and international trade laws are just a few. Another risk factor would be being able to trust the people you’re dealing with. Will the supplier be able to deliver the same quality product that your domestic businesses are supplying? When operating business in foreign countries a business wants to be sure that the product will remain the same quality especially when Starbucks is putting their name on the product. They expect the product to be the same as they have been producing domestically. Another thing to be considered by Starbucks is the environmental risks. Some companies have stricter laws pertaining to permits and document filing. It may be more difficult for Starbucks to get their plan approved in a foreign country. The final thing that needs to be considered is the financial risk. At one time, the U.S. dollar was king and traded favorably against all other currencies as the global reserve currency. “In recent years, the dollar has lost some of its ground to other currencies. If you own a U.S. company engaging in business overseas, the risk and expense involved in converting dollars to the local currency may fall on your shoulders where it once did not.” (Morello, 2013). Starbucks should consider operating in a country where they can bank with the same bank internationally as they bank with domestically.…

In the general orders or in the personnel manual of virtually every police organization there is language about “ethics” and “integrity.” But what exactly does that mean? Ethics is an easy word to throw around and yet very hard to define. “Police officers are held to a higher standard than the general public, both on and off duty, but do we really understand why that is and how an organization can be confident that its employees always act with integrity? There are just a few thoughts for all law enforcement personnel to ponder, from the chief executive to the newest recruit.” (Sgt. Smith)…

Operant Conditioning molds behavior by the consequences of an individual through punishment, reinforcement and extinction. Observational Learning happens from observing the behavior of other individuals. Social Learning is a behavior learned from a social environment. Prejudice is developed and nurture through classical and operant conditioning from an early age when an individual acts prejudice towards something and is rewarded for acting in such a way or saying such things. For example A parent, say father, says (and please do not take offence towards this it is only an example!) “Stupid wet-back, they’re no good for anything but taking our jobs!” a son or daughter will learn that this is applicable behavior. Then when the child, son or daughter, says something along the same lines around his or her father the father would agree, laugh or show affection towards the child’s comment. Thus the behavior is not being corrected allowing the ignorant behavior to continue. For my presentation I would use Rhyme-keys and Loci Method to help me remember notes and slides. I would Use Rhyme-keys for myself on key words in the slides to help me remember key ideas with Loci Method with pictures and diagrams in the slides to better help my memory. For example if I had a slide on the marketing sale rates on, say computers being sold I would use a graph with percentages over time with a scale on sale rate, I would use key words to explain the key points for why there is a clime or fall in sales. Cognitive, physiological, and behavioral are the three qualities. Cognitive is a mental process that involves memory, attention, understanding language, producing language, reasoning, problem solving and decision making. Physiological deals with the understanding of one’s own body, hygiene and appearance. Emotional is in regards to self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. If I were interviewing applicants for a position in my company I…
