I chose to do my final for the Criminal Justice academy on the United States Coast Guard. The reason I chose that topic is because it has always interested me and I plan to hopefully pursue a career in that field. My opinion on the Coast Guard is that it is the best branch of the military and there is no other like them and without the Coast Guard, the United States would not be the way it is today. To support my statement I’m going to talk about what they are, when they got started, what their purpose is, and what makes them different and stand out from all the other branches in the United States army.
The United States Coast Guard was founded in 1790. They have been around for over 200 years. They are one of the five armed forces of the United States military that are trained to carry a fire arm. They have to go through a rigorous training regiment in into to be able to carry a weapon. They are also the only the only military organization in the United Sates that are within Homeland Security. This means they not only handle danger in other nations like other branches in the army, but also domestic situations within the United States. The Coast Guard has safeguarded the United States maritime interests and environments around the world. They handle all water related problems around the United States. So they pretty much cover and secure the boundary of the United States. The Coast Guard is able to adapt to any terrain or problem that is placed in front of them. They must be very responsive and are on the call constantly. No other branch in the army can do what the Coast Guard does and there is still much more they do.
The Coast Guard not only watches over the coast lines, but they also provide a persistent presence along rivers, ports, littoral regions, and high seas. So that makes them the keepers of the rivers and ports, so all marine related problems and situations and handled by them. The United States Coast Guard is local, regional, national, and international. They have a lot to bring to the United States and have a big impact on things that happen in the United States. They are a unique instrument of maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship. As of 2012 there are forty three thousand active duty members, eight thousand are ready to go on duty while eight thousand eight hundred civilian have a career with the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard responded to nineteen thousand seven hundred and ninety search and rescue missions and cases. They have saved over three thousand five hundred sixty lives and more then seventy seven million dollars in property. They also removed over one hundred and seven metric tons of cocaine that was found in the United States transit zone. It most likely comes from the drug traffickers that are caught trying to smuggle drugs through United States waters and they almost never get away with it. The United States Coast Guard even trained Iraqi Naval Forces. They have conducted over twenty five thousand container inspections. The Coast Guard has also done three thousand seven hundred safety and security exams on vessels that are United States registered.
The following information was found on a pamphlet call “the Helmsman”. The Coast Guard’s standard is integrity. They never give up and are held to a higher standard than all the others. They demonstrate uncompromising ethical conducts and have moral behavior. They go through a rigorous training and are not able to graduate until they show they are ready. The Coast Guard is fair and kind to the people they serve; they are a diverse work force. There training center is made purposely to turn boys to men, it prepares them for the rest of their lives. It challenges that to be more then they can be to push themselves past their limits. But most importantly, it teaches them teamwork. How to work well with others and to not depend on one another but to benefit from ones presence there and to share ideas. Once they’ve made it through...
