Harley Davidson –Threats (T)
New Emission Standards One of the growing Threats to Harley Davidson’s reign of dominance in US markets has been a growing awareness of the environment. In response to this, the bar for emission standards is continuously raised. In 2010 model year or newer motorcycles emission standards for both HC + NOx were reduced from 1.4 prior to 2010 to just 0.8 after 2010 (US Government Printing Office. 2013). For at least 5 years now, there have been rumors circulating that Harley Davidson would abandon the traditional air cooled designs in favor of a new liquid cooled lineup in response to ever growing emission standards (Huze. 2011). If emission control standards continue to tighten, Harley Davidson may be forced to do exactly that.
Procurement of Raw Materials Historically, Harley Davidson has relied on limited number of suppliers for raw materials to provide the components used in its manufacturing plants. In some cases, the entire company’s business is dependent on just one supplier to deliver certain raw materials in time. The lack of versatility in this area means that rising input costs could lead to capacity issues in the long run. Additionally, increasing costs for commodities could lead to capacity constraints, ultimately leading to lower production (Harley Davidson, Inc. 2012).

Competitive Landscape Currently, Harley Davidson holds 56% of the market share for heavyweight motorcycles, defined as those motorcycles that displace more than 650cc. To some this may be an impenetrable advantage in the market, to other, a source of vulnerability (Taylor III, 2012). For years, Harley has been the undisputed king of the “bad boys”, but in recent years up and coming companies such as Polaris are trying to muscle in to the motorcycle arena. Polaris, a company known for its snow mobiles has only recently begun selling motorcycles 14 years ago (Taylor III, 2012). Polaris has shown that it understands what its

    Harley-Davidson’s history began in 1903 when Arthur Davidson, his brothers Walter and William, and William Harvey produced three motorcycles in a shed built in the Davidson’s backyard. Their reputation in motorcycle racing grew in the early 1900’s and elevated even higher with the production of the “V-twin engine” a Harley-Davison trademark. The new engine allowed the company to thrive throughout World War I by producing 17,000 motorcycles for military use. The company produced its eagle emblem and developed signature models like the Hydra-Glide(1949), K-model(1952), Sportster(1957), and the Duo-Glide(1958) for the 1930’s to the 1950’s. Harley-Davidson was the last remaining motorcycle manufacturing company by 1953. The company’s reputation began to spiral downhill after it was taken over by the American Machine and Foundry(AMF) in 1969. Due to a gross decline in sales during the 1970’s, AMF decided to put the company up for sale. In 1981, thirteen members of the Harley-Davidson management team engineered a leveraged buyout of the company. The company would struggle shortly after due to decreased sales and a heavy debt load. Richard Teerlink (CEO) convinced lenders to accept a newly structured plan within hours away from bankruptcy. Teerlink’s new plan that included new marketing techniques and manufacturing strategies plus tariffs placed on Japanese motorcycles aided in Harley-Davidson’s long battle to regain market share.…

Harley-Davidson is the leading producer of heavyweight motorcycles in the United States. They are the most iconic producer with a fan base that stretches all around the world. It all began in 1903, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, when Bill Harley and Arthur Walter Davidson developed a one-cylinder motorcycle which built in a small wooden shed. By 1905, they had produced 11 motorcycles and were producing 154 by 1908. Other members of the Harley and Davidson families quickly joined the team. In 1909, they produced the 1000 CC V-Twin which is still in use today. In 1917, one-third of all Harley’s were used to aid in the WWI war effort which continued through WWII.     Harley-Davidson should consider modernizing the technology used in its motorcycles while at the same time maintaining their retro look. Harley’s lack of innovation has tarnished the brand’s image, especially to younger consumers. The Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Mustang have all revived classic body styles in their latest model redesign. However, modern technology was incorporated into these models, so while they look similar to classic automobiles of the past, they have all the bells and whistles of a modern car. Harley has emphasized having its motorcycles resembled those of the company’s storied past, however they have done so by not updating certain components of the bikes, and by keeping old technologies in their new bikes. Although the vintage look and feel is appealing to its loyal followers, Harley should modernize the technology used in its bikes in order better compete with its Japanese competitors. Winnebago, Polaris, Thor, Arctic Cat, and Marine Products are just some of the companies that also compete under Recreational Vehicles, but these companies dominate the industry comprising of 92% of the market share. Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Honda used their brand image from their other products to break into the motorcycle industry and gain market share. The Japanese companies’ success in the heavyweight motorcycle industry began with copying other products, such as Harley Davidson’s designs and look, but produced with cheaper inputs and an overall quality inferior to that of a Harley Davidson. Over the years they have been able to improve their quality, innovative designs, technology and a cheaper price, but they have been unable to compete with Harley’s brand image.
