The article helps me understand more about Tourette’s syndrome. It helps me identify the several methods that may help a child to overcome his or her fear about Tourette’s syndrome. This article also aids in informing the general public about this disorder, and further educate the parents and teachers who have or are teaching children with Tourette’s syndrome. This article is also helpful to children with Tourette’s syndrome as it creates self-awareness of their disability. Although it was written in the perspective of a teacher, this article conveyed the positive outlooks of this disorder. The article does not mention the setbacks of Tourette’s…
Conducting research on the effectiveness of treatments for phobic disorders require researchers to have a reliable and valid means of assessing disorders. Reliability is the consistency of a measuring instrument, such as questionnaires or scales to assess how fearful a person is about something. Reliability of questionnaires or scales can be measured in terms of whether the test items are consistent, which is called test-retest reliability. Hiller et al. (1990) reported satisfactory to excellent diagnostic agreement in a test-retest study using the Munic Diagnostic Checklist which is structured and self-administered. This high reliability may be due to the fact it’s self-administered, as there is less opportunity for the administrator to affect the responses that are given. Also, people with social phobias might prefer this due to their fears of negative evaluation.…

People with Tourette Syndrome have two kinds of tics. Motor, or vocal tics. Motor tics are movements, hand shaking, blinking, shaking, etc. Vocal tics are sounds, throat clearing, squeaking, humming etc. All tics are involuntary, meaning that you can’t control them, which could get you in social trouble, if your tic looks voluntary, kissing, pinching, etc. People with Tourette also have low amounts of dopamine in their brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which controls movement.…

The chart above summarizes Ms. Merzig’s (teacher) and Ms. Reilly’s (parent) ratings on the BASC-2. For a detailed description of areas rated in the Clinically Significant or At-Risk range, see the corresponding “Description” category. In the school setting, Ms. Merzig’s ratings place Tyler in the Low range for Anxiety. This indicates that Tyler’s behaviors in the area of Anxiety are considered lower for a male his age.…
The study being presented was conducted by Taylor and Oliver and published in 2008. It looks at the self-injurious phenotypes of individuals with SMS under environmental factors. The authors note that these self-injurious behaviours (head banging, hand biting, skin picking, wrist biting) are extremely prevalent in SMS, going as high as in 98% of cases. There has also been supporting evidence of a biological determinant for these self-injurious behaviours as there is a prevalence of high pain thresholds as well. With this growing body of literature on self-injurious behaviours the question that is being asked is what brings about this harmful phenotype. Taylor and Oliver note that biological factors may be interacting with external events to…
Identifying and understanding the causes of Emotional and Behavioral Disorder (EBD) can help in developing successful interventions and prevention strategies. Research has been unable to show that any specific factors cause EBD, but causal risk factors seem to concur with EBD. These risk factors are categorized as either internal (biological) or external (family, school, and culture) (Yell, Meadows, Drasgow, and Shriner, 2009).…
