The World’s Most Lucrative Business
The Legalization of Prostitution and Sex Workers

The adult and sex industries are lucrative businesses. (Drea) They have been thriving and evolving since the 18th Century BC. (Head) Sex is sold everywhere from M&M commercials to shampoo advertisements, cartoons, reality TV and even literature. Through every channel of media, and converted into sensual experiences, the idea of sex is marketed. Prostitution is no different. In a world where burlesque shows, strip clubs, and pornography are sanctioned by the law, prostitution is for some reason treated as if explicit sex in the media is not tantamount to paid sex acts. For a majority of sex workers, prostitution is solely for monetary benefits to sustain their day-to-day life. This is because those women are underprivileged, lack an adequate education or were sexually and mentally abused throughout their childhood. Sometimes, there are even factors that go unnoticed. In some cases, it is a combination of factors. For some women, prostitution is a lifestyle that bolsters a luxurious standard of living and serves as compensation for the things that were missing from their lives previously. (Tea) Prostitutes are not always victims. In either option, consent is key factor in the decision to be a sex worker. Prostitution and sex work are just as much of a legitimate business as any Fortune 500 company. While there is no current, exact price quote for the sex industry, a whopping $108 billion dollars has been the estimated amount of money exchanged for that market. Sex is always for sale and in high demand. Sex will also never sell out as everyone knows. In Columbia Picture’s 2005 film “Fun with Dick and Jane”, Jim Carrey and his wife ran out of ways to acquire money to sustain themselves. He told her “Well there’s always prostitution.”(Carrey) Prostitution is always readily available. Prostitution is about supply and demand. A man or woman’s body is his or her product that a willing consumer will purchase. What makes prostitution so versatile and profitable is that there is an array of consumers. Not all men that buy into prostitution are greasy low lives that have noting going for them. In fact, more than a third of America’s wealthiest men have paid for sex. (Monet) That bracket includes stock brokers, lawyers, judges, and our beloved politicians. Let me remind you of Eliot Spitzer; the former governor of New York. In March 2008, he actually voluntarily resigned, because he was involved in an investigation that connected him to an escort service scandal. According to Dirty Money: The Business of High End Prostitution, something as common as dinner and drinks with an escort can cost a client up to $5,000.00, a sleepover costs $10,000.00, and a week costs $40,000.00 or more. All of these things include sex of course. The reason these prices are terrifyingly high is, because though still a prostitute, an escort offers temporary companionship. These customers are willing to spend money on the listed services (and so many more that were not mentioned) to essentially invest in the business. Traditional perceptions of prostitutes are of filthy women who stand on corners and walk the streets at ungodly hours of the night. They are dressed in cheap outfits, with stripper heels, and clown make-up. These women typically have a drug addiction or a history of drug abuse as the track markings on her forearm so beautifully display. Well, that does not have to be the case. Times are always changing and ideas are evolving. Sex today can be and usually is sold indoors as opposed to outdoors. Brothels for example are a safer and cleaner environment for a prostitute to conduct business in a more discreet manor. A brothel is a prostitutes “office” if you will. Regardless of the time of day, a worker can come to a brothel “clock in” and get to work. On average, common prostitutes in the United...
