I. Characters: Protagonist: Mary Lennox - One of the novel's two protagonists, Mary Lennox is a ten-year-old girl who, after the death of her parents in India, is sent to live with her uncle in Yorkshire, England. She evolves from a spoiled, unloved and unloving creature to a girl who is full of spirit and surrounded by friends. She begins the book as its central character. Colin Craven - The other of the novel's protagonists, Colin Craven is Archibald Craven's ten-year-old son and heir. He was born shortly after the death of his mother, and his father could not bear to look at him because of his resemblance to her. Colin's childhood has been entirely bedridden, and his servants have been commanded to obey his every whim. As a result, Colin is extremely imperious and gloomy. Dickon Sowerby - Dickon is alternately described as "a common moor boy" and "a Yorkshire angel"; he is both. Two years older than Colin and Mary, Dickon has lived on Missel Moor his entire life, and has a uniquely intimate relationship with the land. He has rosy cheeks, rough curly hair, and blue eyes precisely the same color as the sky over the moor; he even carries a set of pan-pipes. He has the power to charm both animals and people: all the creatures who come close to him are instantly tamed, and he counts a fox, a crow, and two wild squirrels among his pets. He is the brother of Martha and the son of Susan. Martha Sowerby - Mary's friend and maidservant, Martha is distinguished by her charming frankness and levelheaded approach to all aspects of life. Her simplicity and kindness are a great help to Mary upon the latter's arrival at Misselthwaite. In her very ordinariness, Martha represents the goodness of all the people of Yorkshire.

The character that seemed to be the boldest in this story was Mary Anne Bell. She went through so much change and transformation in one small excerpt of the novel. It seemed as though she lost her innocence and took on a new identity over time. Being Mark Fossie’s girlfriend, nobody was sure how to feel about her at first. When she got there, she was as innocent and sweet as can be. She was attractive with a bubbly personality and a happy…

Martha meets a nice young man traveling on the same train as her, his name is Peter. He makes it very clear that he has feelings for Martha but also that he has feelings for a lot of other woman. Through Peter’s actions, we can infer that he thinks of her as a very intelligent and prudent woman. Also through Peter’s words and actions we can see that Martha is very modest about her position. When Peter tries to give Martha a horse, she declines the gift because she knows that it is not moral for someone in her position to accept. Another character that helps us to learn a great deal more about Martha is Connan, the Lord or the manor. Connan expresses that he believes that Martha is capable of turning Avlean into what society requests from her, which is to be a respectable and well-mannered lady. Connan also sees Martha as an individual that is very confident and can easily stand her ground. An example of when he realizes this is when Martha rightfully trumps Celestine. A final character that helps the reader to understand and to learn about Martha is Avlean, the young girl she is the governess of. One aspect of Martha that we learn about through Avlean is how authoritative Martha is. She has rules that are set in stone to help Avlean grow to her fullest potential. Another aspect is that Martha is an ally for Avlean. She is always there for her and always will be through falls and triumphs. The final aspect of Martha that we see is an aspect that has been missing throughout most of Avlean’s life which is the motherly figure. From the other characters around her, we can derive that Martha is a hard but kind individual who can help wherever she…

    The Hiding Place

Watching the movie The Hiding Place made me realize how much better and different books are than movies. A major difference between the book and the movie was the beginning. For instance, the book started with the watch shops’ 100th Anniversary, and the movie started with the Nazis taking away the Ten Boom family’s radio. The movie skipped a lot of events such as the 100th Anniversary and introducing the family and their roles in the story. It would have been better if the movie at least showed the 100th Anniversary so that people watching could see how important, respected, and well known the Ten Boom family was in their community. In addition, the role Betsie played in the story was the same in both the book and the movie. Betsie is Corrie’s sister. She was significant to the story because her character and personality was “a light in the dark tunnel” they were passing through. Betsie held onto her strong faith in the Lord and thought only positive things about their situation. For example, Betsie said to thank God under any circumstance because He never makes mistakes and there is a reason for everything. You see, God has a plan for all of us and it may be hard to understand sometimes, but with Him it all works out for the best. Corrie and Betsie learned that even the most dreadful things such as fleas, can be a blessing from God. “You know we’ve never understood why we had so much freedom in the big room,’ she said,’well-i’ve found out.’...’because of the fleas!” p.231 in The Hiding Place. Overall, I enjoyed the book more than the movie. The reason is because the book had more details; therefore, everything made more sense and was easier to understand. It was also far more interesting than the movie. The book had a bit of romance, mystery, drama, and never bored me. On the other hand, the movie was boring, had no suspense or drama and I couldn’t fully concept what was going on. In conclusion, The Hiding Place helped me realize how truly blessed I am. This story…

Catherine Scerri’s story should be engraved and shown in Memory Lane Garden because she shows that one person can exceed the common expectations placed upon them and leave there their previous life for the better of others. The field (charity) she works in truly shows her personal morals and how she is epithetic for others but doesn’t just stop at supporting others but speaks up for them and their rights, which is a rare quality that she possesses. She should be chosen as she is a good role model to others and is able to represent Moonee valley district as a whole using her honourable ways.…
