The Roman army before 264BC was a citizens’ army, comprised of farmers and the population, with very little to no full time soldiers. Every man was expected to provide his own gear, and as such it was very difficult to recruit the poor or slaves to fight, and when they were recruited, it was at the expense of the state. Another problem with a citizens’ army is that they are not full time soldiers, and many are often inexperienced in combat, and lacked the training necessary to be truly superior to any opponent.…

    • 4 Pages

Regardless of how powerful they were able to become, each mighty empire including Rome, would eventually have its downfall. There were many contributing factors to the ultimate demise of the Roman empire. One of the biggest reasons for the fall of Rome, was its rapid expansion. The Roman empire was expanding at a very high rate which led to troubles administrating law in the conquered areas, defending borders and the expansion caused the military to weaken as they were stretched too thin. The failing economy and high inflation crippled the Roman empire. Due to the cost of defending its empire, the Romans were constantly threatened by bankruptcy. The large amounts of gold spent by the wealthy in foreign countries led to a shortage in gold which effected the production of Roman currency. The gap between prosperity led to a division between the Roman people. The Roman army was made up of mercenaries and slaves who risked their lives for very little in return which led to a rift between the majority of the population and government. As the mistreated mercenaries and slaves began deserting the army the Romans provided the German group known as the Visigoths, land in return for fighting in the army. Sooner than later, that Romans would begin to realize how bad of a mistake this was. One of the biggest reasons for the fall of the Roman empire was the barbarian knowledge of Roman military tactics which would be used against them. The Barbarians acquired the Roman style of warfare and military tactics by serving in the Roman army were eventually used against the Roman Empire and led to the sack of Rome by the…

However, the empire’s vast territory proved to be difficult to maintain; groups from all over the world began to move into the empire and invade the nation. More problems in addition to heightening conflicts began to proliferate as the empire crumbled. The deterioration and collapse of the Roman Empire was the result of the failure of its political system, depreciation of traditional Roman values, and growth of slavery as well as the advance of Christianity, destruction of the plague, and lead poisoning.…

In Document A it shows us the emperor's reign and death. In the questions it asked us several challenging questions. For example “What message might these frequent and violent changes in leadership have sent to people living outside the Roman Empire?” And I answered it “ It tells people that they didn't want to be Roman, because they are very violent.” But one of the most important questions on the quiz was “ How does this document help explain the decline of the Roman Empire?” Which to me I think that Document A helped explain the decline of the Roman Empire because they didn't have the greatest protection and that there soldiers were becoming very weak.…

There were many reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Each document in this essay explains a different reason. Some causes were: political, economic, social, and military differences and problems. Basically, the problem was that the gap between the rich aristocrats and the poor serfs got bigger and bigger; the rich got richer as the poor got poorer. Also, when something grows, it always falls back down. In Document 1, an excerpt from a book was taken out. According to the authors, the basic problems facing the Western Roman Empire came from the people that gave up devotion to the old civilization and didn't believe that it was worth saving. Why should they care about their land if they weren't allowed to take part in government say, they couldn't form groups to protect themselves, and were even excluded from their own army? The practically jobless people realized that their cities were slowly falling, but no one bothered to stop their decline; it was something that had to happen. The loss of popular support to the oppressive government, increased government corruption, division of the empire, and internal power struggles were some political causes that led to the fall of Rome. In Document 2, two causes for the fall of Rome were: the large size, and the introduction to Christianity. Because the Empire grew too large, it became uneasy to control. It was inevitable for the fall to occur, no matter how much anyone tried. Jesus' introduction to Christianity also started a change. The clergy (priests) helped change the moral values of society. It no longer mattered much, and military power was buried or thrown away. The rich's wealth was taken away and given to charity (poor). In Document 3, the Muller's explanation for the decline was an economic issue. As the Empire grew stronger, so did economy. When the Empire started to decline, business ceased and there was little progress, so that also crashed along with the empire itself. Slavery caused another…
