Teenage Suicide Epidemic Analysis
Though the recognition of the suicide epidemic in teenagers is recognized and commonly heard of, not many individuals realize the causes that can lead, or do lead, to this world wide issue. Peter’s use of a teenager’s suicidal stage in By The Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead ultimately draws attention to the reasoning of the current teenage suicide epidemic. Often times, as shown through many sources and thorough studies, suicide is caused by many reasons, such as, depression, bullying, drugs, and alcohol.
In Julie Anne Peters’s 2010 novel, By The Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead, she lays out a more in-depth view on the causes of teenage suicide and speaks from a perspective of a clinically depressed teenager’s mind. Depression was recognized around the second millennium B.C., and was thought of as a demonic possession, which only a priest could rid (“Historical Understandings of Depression”). This form of bullying is not as often spoken of, since it can be easily noticed and taken care of quicker than other forms of bullying, in most cases. Some signs of physical bullying to look for are, unexplained bruises or cuts, anxiety or fear of going to school, ripped clothing or missing items upon returning home, excuses to not attend school, etc. Students that are generally targeted by this form of bullying, are typically quiet and weak, and do not know how to speak for themselves.
