Tecquipment H10 Flow-Measuring Apparatus
TECQUIPMENT H10 FLOW-MEASURING APPARATUS 1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Flow-Measuring Apparatus is designed to accustom students to typical methods of measuring the discharge of an essentially incompressible fluid, whilst at the same time giving applications of the Steady-Flow Energy Equation (Bernoulli's Equation). The discharge is determined using a venturi meter, an orifice plate meter and a rotameter. Head losses associated with each meter are determined and compared as well as those arising in a rapid enlargement and a 90-degree elbow. The unit is designed for use with the TecQuipment HI Hydraulic Bench, which provides the necessary liquid service and gravimetric evaluation of flow rate. 1.1 Description of Apparatus Figure 1. Flow measuring apparatus.

The TecQuipment HI0 Flow-Measuring Apparatus is shown Figure 1. Water from the HI Hydraulic Bench enters the equipment through a Perspex venturi meter, which consists of a gradually-converging section, followed by a throat, and a long gradually-diverging section. After a change in cross- section through a rapidly diverging section, the flow continues along a settling length and through an orifice plate meter. This is manufactured in accordance with BSI042, from a plate with a hole of reduced diameter through which the fluid flows.

Following a further settling length and a right-angled bend, the flow enters the rotameter. This consists of a transparent tube in which a float takes up an equilibrium position. The position of this float is a measure of the flow rate.

After the rotameter the water returns via a control valve to the Hydraulic Bench and the weigh tank. The equipment has nine pressure tappings as detailed in Figure 2 each of which is connected to its own manometer for immediate read out.

    2. Once the flow reaches its steady state (i.e. when a constant outflow rate is maintained), record the elevation head (by reference to an arbitrary datum such as the base of the tank) and the pressure head at each piezometer. Also measure the water and sand levels (relative to your datum), and the dimensions (length, depth and width) of the tank.…

The experiment performed was Experiment IV: Fluid Flow Meters and Tray Hydraullics. The group was composed of Alex Long, Khanh Ho, Tricia Heitmann and myself. The first day of experimentation was April 16, 2013. On this day, Alex and I ran the sieve tray apparatus to study the vapor and liquid tray hydraulics parameters for sieve type crossflow distillation trays. Tricia and Khanh ran the fluid flow apparatus to determine the operating characteristics of the Venturi and orifice meters.…

In part 1, it was determined that the graduated cylinder is the most accurate and precise, as the average density, 0.987g/mol, was very close to the accepted value, 0.9977045g/mol. The percentage of error in the table 1.1 (graduated cylinder) was very low, with 1.10% compared to 15.8% in table 1.2 (pipet) and 1.92% in table 1.3 ( buret). A reason for which the graduated cylinder was the most accurate and precise could be for the following: one was capable of measuring the amount of tap water at an eye level, as for the pipet it was too high and a miscalculation could have happened seeing that one has to…

It is assumed that Stokes’ law can be applied to a mass of dispersed soil particles of various shapes and sizes. Larger particles settle more rapidly than the smaller ones. The hydrometer analysis is an application of Stokes’ law that per- mits the calculation of the grain size distribution in silts and clays, where the soil particles are given the sizes of equivalent spherical particles. The density of a soil-water suspension depends upon the concentration and specific gravity of the soil particles. If the suspension is allowed to stand,…
