Manufacturing of Sunflower Oil Refined sunflower oil will be ready to consume after two manufacturing processes. They are raw oil manufacturing and refining processes. These two steps are charted below. Chart-I: Manufacturing of Raw Oil Chart-II: Manufacturing of Refined Oil
Raw oil manufacturing consists of 2 stages. These are pressing and extraction stages. In the first stage, seed of sunflower becomes sunflower oil. Cleaning, breaking, separation, shimming, roasting and pressing processes are done in this stage.
In the cleaning process, purchased sunflower seeds are separated of external elements such as dust, sand, stone, lace and metals. This process is accomplished by using difference in size, shape, density and magnetism. Breaking process breaks the covers of sunflower seed by colliding method which is achieved by high-speed rolling plates in circular tube.
Covers and seeds that were broken in the separation process are passed through vibrating mesh mechanism. Covers are sucked by using air flow. Covers that are not easily separated will be separated in further processes.
For shimming, seeds are shredded in to pieces of 0.07mm-0.08mm in thickness. After shimming, roasting is done by using multi-layer pans. Purpose of this process is to increase effiency of the sunflower seed. Seeds that are roasted for 1-2 hours in 11-15C become less humid.
In the pression process, roasted seeds are pressed in a circular tube.
In second stage, extraction, oiled residue is washed with a solvent to obtain most of the oil. This oil is stored as raw oil in tanks and rest of the residue is used as a resource in forage industry.
Refined oil is manufactured after the raw oil’s processes. The refining processes include 6 steps as; degumming, neutralization, dewaxing, winterization, whitening and deodorization. First step is degumming. Raw oil is hydrated then phospholipids, proteins and gums lose their solubility and they separate from oil. After that step,

2.0 Chemical BackgroundBiodiesel comprises long-chain fatty acids with an alcohol attached on it and produced through the reaction of a vegetable oil with alcohol in the presence of the catalyst, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide called transesterification (Hafman, 2003). The catalyst used to hydrolysis the triglyceride, and alcohols combine with the fatty acid to produce biodiesel (Gorham, 2006). After a complete reaction, the glycerol and ester form two liquid layers and catalyst is removed for reuse.…

We will be synthesizing synthetic banana oil, or otherwise known as isopentyl acetate. We will synthesize thie oil by combining isopentyl alcohol with acetic acid and sulfuric acid, and heating under reflux for one hour. After this time, we will separate and purify our product via washing with sodium bicarbonate (that separates compounds via solubility properties) and distilling (that purifies via different boiling point properties of the compounds). The reaction that occurs is modeled below:…

To separate seeds, one would have to put a large amount of cotton into the gin. Then, it goes through a wooden drum with hooks that caught the fiber and pulled them through a mesh. The mesh did not let the seeds through, but the hooks let the fibers easily move through the mesh. To do this advanced process, one would have to use his…

Summary: Banana Oil is a major flavoring in many different mixtures from candles to different types of food. The major organic chemical that is banana oil is ester, which is what gives it its strong odor. In this scenario, the banana oil supply is running low for Cavendish Distilling Company. So they want to formulate a synthetic version of banana oil to replenish their supply.…

Beating: The olive fruit paste is added to water is additionally beaten to extract more oil from the olive cells. Salt can be used to assist osmotic breakdown [of the cells] and release oil Centrifuging: The mixture is poured into a horizontal centrifuge and continuously spun at high speed. The light oil forms in the upper, inner layer, and the remaining water and heavier fruit pieces form the outer layers. The light…

The percent yield was 70 percent. Separation of the crude product was conducted by extraction using a separatory funnel, and drying was done by using sodium carbonate. The purification was conducted using distillation. Since esterification reactions are slow, they need a catalyst like inorganic acids. The reactants need to be refluxed in order to increase the yield of the product. Reflux is technique used for distillation and its primary purpose is to supply energy to chemical reactions over an extended period of time. In most organic reactions, the reaction is very slow. To speed up the reaction, heating is generally used. Since many organic compounds are characterized by low boiling points, they vaporize when subjected to heat, thereby preventing the reaction to completion. To prevent this from happening, heating under reflux is used where a condenser is attached to prevent the reagents from…

The sunflower family (Helianthus) has perfect flowers, with male and female organs both on the same flower, but with either the male or the female organ infertile. What is usually called the flower is actually a composite flower, made up of numerous flowers or florets crowded together. Once the plant has flowered, usually in summer, it produces a sweet pollen mixture that lures bees and other insects. When the bees arrive, they get their feet wet with the pollen as they drink the plant's nectar. The plant relies on the sperm-producing pollen coming into contact with the egg-containing stigma. The yellow pollen is transferred from the insect's hairy legs to the stigma. This is the first step in sunflower reproduction. Once the pollen goes down the stigma, it releases sperm into the ovary. An available egg receives the sperm, and the egg is fertilized with a meat-bearing seed. The pollen/sperm can belong to the original plant or may come from another sunflower. Self-pollination is a mechanism that the sunflower uses to stay alive. On the occasion where the stigma receives no pollen, the stigma will twist and wrap itself around its own pollen. Seeds created by self-pollination will only produce flowers that look like the original plant, so no hybridization will have occurred.Sunflowers are fast reproducers, and one plant can create dozens of others. Plant seeds about an 1 inch below the ground. Germination occurs quickly, usually between 5 and 10 days, but spring crops produce more plants than summer crops. Spring crops are planted in April and May. Summer crops go in the ground in June and July. When the back of the plant's head turns brown, it is ready for harvesting.…
