Summary Of The Poem 'Inside Out' By Ha
Ha is a very optimistic person with her circumstances. First of all, in the poem “Inside Out”, she says “Maybe the soldiers will no longer patrol our neighborhood, maybe I can jump rope after dark.” Even with the terror of war that is only miles away from her, she tries to look at the good side of it. Secondly, in the poem “1975: Year of the Cat”, she writes “Mother warns how we act today foretells the whole year,” and “Everyone must smile no matter how we feel.” Ha thinks that she has to be as cheerful as possible so it could hopefully bring her good luck and take all of the bad things in her life away. Finally, in the poem “Early Monsoon”, Ha asserts that “We pretend the Monsoon has come early. In the distance bombs explode like thunder,

The song “Baby It’s Cold Outside” was originally written by Frank Loesser but the version I chose was from Glee sung by Kurt and Blaine. This song represents how a holiday like Christmas is supposed to be spent with a person you love and so in the song the singer is talking to someone special and is asking them to stay for a while longer. The poetic devices they use are out there, I really can’t stay, and baby it’s cold outside. The song has a rhythm to it. The song rhymes a lot. There is a meaning to how the rhythm and rhymes are shown in the song.…

While I perceive the poem to be one that reflects on her youth and reminisces on the wonderful memories she shared with her family and the feeling of protection and safety gained from them, others may read it differently. For example a colleague of mine proposed the idea that Harwood was now an older women, depressed and trying to find or remember a time in her life when she was in fact happy, that she is trying to escape the inevitability of death by escaping to her youth. Either way her poems offer the responder a variety of readings, which, I think, offer her work an integrity that is not eroded by…

A great deal of literary works are written with the purpose of telling story. A narrative poem simply tells a story from the perspective of a narrator who does not reveal their personal thoughts or feelings. A prime example of a narrative poem would be Out, out, by Robert Frost in which the story of a little boy losing his life with a detached narrator.…

These words coming from August herself show a lot for the fact that she has gone through many troubles in her time as well. She had gone through many obstacles to get where she was with her business in honey. Not only that, but she also had many family issues she had to deal with. Having her sister, May, commit suicide made her even more of a stronger woman which is another point in how life isn’t perfect at all. August tries to show Lily that even though bad things may happen in life, you cannot let it affect the way you do things in the future. In other words, it should not stop anyone from continuing on with life and being happy.…

Poets use their work as a forum to share the stories and shed light on the experiences of people in groups that get overlooked. Omar Sakr’s powerful poem ‘The H word’ explores issues of poverty and danger in the daily lives of disadvantaged people and draws attention to the idea of a safe, happy home environment that isn’t the same for people who aren’t privileged. Similarly, Kevin Gilbert’s haunting poem “Kiacatoo”, serves as a tool to tell the stories of Aboriginal people and the massacres that were otherwise swept under the rug and ignored. Both poets expose the problems people in marginalised groups have and continue to face, giving a voice to those who have been silenced due to discrimination. Underprivileged people deal with problems the privileged are ignorant of, and often have their voice to speak of the issues they face taken away.…

    Ha's Character Traits

In the novel so far we’ve experienced quite a few of Ha’s personality traits, but one that’s been very prominent throughout the poems we’ve read is how she curious she is. Whether it be her curiosity about her Papaya tree, or about her future, curiosity is definitely a strong trait of hers. For example in the second poem she says, “Maybe soldiers will no longer patrol our neighborhood-”, and then she continues on with her hopes for the future. This seems to show a bit of curiosity because she’s now curious what her future could hold. She’s obviously hoping for the best outcome but she’s aware that may be nearly impossible. Then in the poem about her Papaya tree she says, “Who knows what he’ll (Brother Quang) notice before me?” This shows that…

There are various things in life that one goes through, and most of our learning comes from childhood. Although, while a kid is supposed to have a wonderful and exciting time. It does not always happen, some kids get mature before their age because life shows them the worst sides of the world at an early part of life. In the poem “Schizophrenia”, it illustrates and gives a particular point of view; in which develops a terrorizing memory.…

Tone is an important aspect of all poetry. It helps convey the emotions, messages, and thoughts the poet tries to express, but most importantly the writer’s attitude regarding the topic. To demonstrate, the poem “Hurricane Season” by Fareena Arefeen uses various examples of figurative language to help the audience recognize the author's ominous tone regarding the destruction caused by hurricanes. To begin, a simile is a way for the writer to compare two ideas using like or as, so the reader can better understand. To illustrate, in the middle of the poem, the text states, “On my thirteenth birthday, I watched the bayou/spill into this dizzy-headed space city/like a push of blood to the lungs”(Lines 15-17).…

The poet wants us to sympathized Miss Havisham greatly, but not entirely. Her own trappings of her strong need to revenge and her morbid existence that has destroyed her carries a symbolic meaning of self – absorption and destruction. This poem introduces us to Miss Harvisham’s character, who has become a type of embittered woman who was disappointed in love and enjoys withdrawing from the world.…

Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the many struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's…

Nouschka’s tone is optimistic even though her future is more or less hopeless in an educated society. Nouschka’s example gives an incredible message to keep trying despite the degree of difficulty or the probability of change. Similarly, in her poem, Chang uses an optimistic tone to make comparison between animals and Tina. She focuses on dead animals, “eyes open, eyes open” (Chang). Tina is referring to a dead animal but she is actually talking to herself.…

Lawrence has written the poem in free verse, there is an irregular pattern and no rhyming scheme which achieves a chaotic fell just like a storm. The structure is quite inconsistent and is unpredictable which can also be considered to imitate the storm. The poem uses enjambment to emphasise the hectic storm. “And as the electric liquid pours out, sometimes A still brighter”. The mix of line lengths and the repeated use of exclamation marks encourage the reader to sound both excited and in awe, just like Lawrence must have been during the witness of the poem. “The rain refuses to come!” this then highlights the power of nature having positive and surprising affects towards humans; creating amazement through form and structure. As well as conveying the message that nature does leave humans in awe and wonderment.…
