In the article “Games of Silence: Indian Boarding Schools in Louise Erdrich’s Novels,” Miriam Schacht describes Indian Boarding Schools as an abusive establishment or a safe haven for Native American students. Miriam illustrates that “Some boarding schools graduates describe the schools as nurturing and helpful. Others, many others, describe emotional trauma, physical punishment, and sexual abuse.” (Schacht 1). Given these points, the latter is truer in Louise Erdrich’s poem “Indian Boarding School: The Runaways” where the speaker depicts the boarding school as oppressive and burdensome.     Culture plays a big part in both of these stories, and shows the effects on identity when you are deprived of your culture. In “Growing Up Native”, the First Nations people are shamed for the culture they have and are obligated to adopt another culture. Typically, in their culture they have long hair, but in these residential schools they were forced to cut it, because it was thought that they had lice. They were told that Indian culture is evil and their only hope was to be Christian. Also, in the book it said “They had to stand up and say things like ‘I’ve found the Lord,’ when a teacher told them to speak” (Carol Geddes, Growing Up Native, page 46). The teachers embarrassed and harassed them for some reasons the children couldn’t control. Typically in First Nations culture the boys would go out to hunt, and the females would stay in school. Therefore, the boys wouldn’t get as much of an education as he girls, and their skills may not have developed as fast. The residential school teachers did not take this into account and tried to embarrass the boys when they couldn’t read in class. They asked the girls to read instead but it goes against their culture to show up to an older boy. These children lost their identities and felt humiliated by these residential school teachers making them go against their original traditions.     These schools lasted from the 1880 up to the end of the 20th century with its primary objective of educating aboriginal children and take the Indian out of the child. This strategy was very damaging as children were separated from their families for extended periods and were prohibited from all cultural aspects of their aboriginal heritage. Children were severely punished for wrong doings and were subjected physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Residential schools damaged aboriginal culture and disrupted families all across Canada. The damaging effect has carried on for several generations and still exists in modern Canadian society. Since the young aboriginals were taken away at a young age, they did not have the nurturing from their families and lacked knowledge and skill on how to raise their own families.     The purpose of the schooling system was to remove all aspects of the Indigenous race and culture. Unfortunately, students had their hair cut, dressed in uniforms, given new names, and were not able to speak their native language. If any rule was broken, students were harmed physically and sexually. For example, a needle would be shoved into a Native Canadian student’s mouth if they spoke their own language. Students were also beaten and strapped, even tied down to beds, being abused sexually and physically for not obeying a leader's orders. Carole Dawson, an Indigenous Residential school student, states that the worst part was, “[p]robably the abuse. It's not only my own abuse. I saw the abuse of others” (109). Young children witnessed abnormal treatment of others, and they also experienced inhumane behaviour. In addition, escaping was common in Residential schools however, the punishment was severe. Many Indigenous students that attempted to escape Residential schools and succeeded, ended up dying from starvation, frostbite, or hypothermia. In fact, over nine-thousand Indigenous Canadians died from their futile efforts of leaving Residential schools. Celia Haig-Brown quoted a female residential school survivor as saying, “[t]hey said they were going to give me a real short haircut for my punishment” (qtd. In Quinlan et al. 68). Furthermore, Indigenous children were not able to see their own families again, the isolation affects the students emotionally, even to this day. Ingrid Annault states “[t]he worst part, besides the second thing of being there was not having your family, not having anybody to hug you and tell you they loved you” (107). A child's innocence is torn and damaged once they are separated from their family.
