Contrastingly, the song ‘Bolero' in scene five symbolises the high spirits, determination and triumph of the women. This is emphasised by the quote "We forgot the Japs-we forgot our hunger-our boils-everything…Together we made this glorious sound that rose above the camp-above the jungle-above the war-rose and rose and took us with it. Fifty voices set us free." This use of music conveys the meaning of the themes of heroism, comradeship, the will to overcome oppression and survival.…

"You Lie" is a sturdy, acoustic number that confidently and aggressively addresses an unfaithful man. The attitude is at the strongest when she suggests killing him and doing the whole world a service. Now, that's harsh. What makes the song work even better is the high attention to detail: she doesn't just fling his ring off a bridge, she explicitly tells how she drives to the middle of a mile-long bridge, then flings the ring off and says that it'll stay there until the Second Coming.…

One of the main themes in this book is Olive's fixation with her culture. At points during the book she talks of her Greek heritage as if she either loves it or hates it, this emotion is a swinging pendulum that alternates depending on which traditional event she's telling us about. It makes her look different to the other girls at school who find her dark hair and skin, her hairy (not to mention tall and broad shouldered) body something to ridicule. She doesn't like her family's general expectation that she will find a Greek man and have a huge wedding with lots of apricot taffeta. Olive does, however, love the history, myths and scenery of her country. Her frame of mind concerning her culture often varies and we see many diverse facets of her personality mixing to create the attitude at that particular time. Her Greek heritage is an important part of the healing process, and is therefore an important theme in the book, bringing up the subject of multiculturalism in the…

Lighting - in this scene the light is shining in from the side, lighting up one side of her face and literally putting her in the spotlight, to mirror her being in the figurative spotlight and enjoying the attention she was receiving from her peers. This side-lighting also kept one side of her face dark and in shadow, adding to the mysterious and alluring air her new reputation demanded. Being unable to see her eyes (due to dark sunglasses) adds to the mystery as we cannot see her expression clearly, since much of our expressions are understood through the eyes. |She deals with the challenge of facing the consequences of her lies by embracing her new ‘strumpet’ label, changing her wardrobe to revealing lingerie-style outfits and acting in a seductive manner. She also perpetuates the lie, showing us that she craved the attention after having experienced it. | |Agrees to lie for the counsellor Mrs. Griffith to hide her affair with student Mica. In her office, Mrs. Griffith begging Olive |Soundtrack - soft guitar music that is also used to accompany the scene in which Brandon begs Olive to pretend to sleep with him. Bob Dylan’s life at the time had a massive influence on the song as it was based on that Edie Sedgwick and the nature of Dylan’s relationship with her at the time of its writing and recording. The song is about a rich girl that thought she could stay rich forever who went to the best school but wasted time doing drugs and partying but when she is faced with the harshness of poverty she is struggling to cope with her life because she had never been taught how to live on the street. The girl in the song is most likely Edie Sedgwick as Edie had come from a wealthy California family but a difficult home environment. Ralph has chosen this song as he loves it. It's a song he'd love to be able to play on guitar. Ralph has stated he loves to play his guitar. However he gets frustrated when he try's to play it on his own. He often has his guitar out when he is relaxing in the unit and has stated he wants to write a song about his mum. Ralph actually sung part of a song he had thought up. The lyrics were very warm towards his mum. However this song was very short and maybe if Ralph gets better at the guitar with these lessons he will be able to put a whole song together about his mum. This would be a very positive event as Ralph finds it very difficult to talk about his family at all.…

The second scene the song appeared at the end of the movie. The song’s lyrics are quite different from the song from the earlier scene. They both have similar meanings such as it both speak about the future and how “tomorrow” will come. The meaning coming from that is that they believe there will be a change in the future. For instance near the ending here, the song was sang by everyone who have died from the revolution. Nevertheless they are singing about having hope that everyone will eventually have their rights. Where they shall put away their swords, the chains should be broken and the men would have their awards such as their rights. The main idea of the ending is very similar to the first time they sing it. They hope for a future where their goals would be accomplished.…
