Slumdog Millionare
Slumdog Millionaire was filmed in 2008 under the direction of Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan. Dev Patel stars as Jamal Malik, a teenage boy who grew up in the slums of Mumbai, India. He finds himself on “Kaun Banega Crorepati?”- India’s version of the American game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Jamal makes it to the final question on the show, which is worth 20 million rupees. The night before the final episode was supposed to air on national television, Jamal is arrested under accusations of cheating. While trying to prove that he is innocent, Jamal shares stories of his childhood that led him to be able to the answers on the show.
The first question on the game show is “who was the star in the 1973 hit film Zanjeer?” Jamal had a flashback to his younger years and remembered working as a bathroom guard with his brother. One day the boys looked up to find a helicopter flying over them, carrying their hero and the star of the movie Zanjeer, Amitabh Bachchan. Jamal’s older brother locked him in the outhouse while he ran to catch a glimpse of the actor. Jamal realized that his only way out was to jump through the toilet hole and into the waste; he did just that. Bachchan didn’t sign autographs to anyone in the swarming crowd of fans, except to little Jamal. Later on, Jamal’s brother Salim steals the autograph and sells it for a few coins.
Jamal was also asked this question: “the song ‘Darshan Do Ghanshyam’ was written by which famous Indian poet?” Maman, the crime boss who took Salim, Jamal, and Latika into his care after bribing them with the promise of a better life, had the children sing Darshan Do Ghanshyam. He also blinded the adolescent singing beggars because they would make a larger profit, just like the original singer. Jamal knew that the answer was Surdas, the blind poet and singer from the 1500’s.
The next question that Jamal was asked was “on an American $100 bill, there is a portrait of which American statesman?” He knew that the answer

Jamal’s personality and morals remained relatively constant throughout his life despite many traumatic and difficult experiences. From what I have seen in the movie, I can conclude that Jamal is a kinesthetic learner, meaning that he obtains his knowledge physically. These events shaped Jamal positively, because through his life experiences, he has acquired and obtained a great amount of general knowledge, more than what is expected from a “Slumdog”. As the great Albert Einstein says, “The only source of knowledge is experience.”…

For example, the main character, Jamal Malik, often struggled with his tribal stigma as a result of his impoverished heritage and belittled social class. While the movie was primarily presented on the set of an international television show called “Do you want to be a millionaire?”, the contestants were normally asked difficult questions. The shows guest appearances were often “doctors, lawyers”, or other highly educated citizens. However, when Jamal, who never finished elementary school, became a successful contestant, he began to encounter several conflicts as a result of tribal stigma of being a “bitch from the slum”. For example, Jamal's ascribed tribal stigma encouraged both the police and the T.V host to challenge his intelligence and knowledge. Soon questioned “ What in the hell a Slumdog could possibly know” when Jamal began to give correct and consistent answers. Thus, Jamal’s tribal stigma caused others to belittle his education because of his…

    Slumdog Millionaire Slums

Arguably one of the strongest points of Slumdog Millionaire is its ability to capture the essence and feeling of the slums in a way that makes the viewer think. The movie accomplishes this by taking a somewhat atypical approach to the slums. By forcing the ever-present poverty and filth to take the backseat it somewhat flips the script and instead focuses on the vibrance life and energy of the slums. There are three scenes that best highlight this idea with the first being when the Jamal and the other children are chased off the tarmac by the police officers. This scene does a wonderful job setting a tone for the childhood flashbacks by showcasing the careless attitudes of the children along with the intense light outside. The song, O……

India is a country in central Asia with a population of over 1.22 billion people making it the second most populous country in the world. Its high population is one of the factors that results in India having such a high poverty rate. In India today over 37% of the population live below the poverty line. The reality of such a statistic means that these people live in conditions unimaginable to people of the western world. When Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire came out at the end of 2008, people instantly fell in love with it. In 2009 it was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won eight, which was the most won by any film that year. Everyone seemed to be very drawn to the “feel good” aspect of the movie where a poor kid like Jamal, the main character of Boyle’s film, can overcome the massive obstacles thrown in front of his path to success and eventually come out with the girl, 100 million Rupees and the love of the nation where he just become an overnight sensation. “Slumdog Millionaire”, a movie review written by Robert Koehler, and Alice Miles’, “Shocked by Slumdog’s Poverty Porn”, both criticize Danny Boyle’s movie, but greatly differ in their composition of the arguments as to why they were displeased with the movie. Koehler writes a very professional review of Slumdog Millionaire that criticizes it for problems such as an underdeveloped and predictable plot line and its skewed depiction of Indian social reality to help to appeal to a westernized audience, whereas Miles writes a much more opinionated essay that dwells more on what seem like her personal problems with the movie, and her very aggressive tone against the movie in the whole paper makes her seem too closed minded on the topic.…

West Indian poetry germinated its seed in the eighteenth century. The art form in the beginnings though vibrant, had been nearly impossible to discover. Caribbean poetry was influenced by slavery and the British system having supreme authority over the people of the West Indies. Accustom to the written form, there is also an oral element to West Indian poetry. This can be seen in, traditional folk songs, sankeys, calypsos, hymns, chants, and reggae songs. This analysis deals with the work of two major Caribbean poets, Eric Roach and Martin Carter. Both poets have significantly represented their purposes and mission in and through their work.…
