Science Test- Paper Towels
“Which kitchen paper is the best at absorbing liquid?”

Scientific Principles- Since paper towels are used to pick up liquids, the volume of liquid it can hold is important. The amount of liquid a towel can absorb can be measured by the volume of liquid it picks up.

Aim- To investigate which kitchen paper is the best at absorbing most liquid.

Hypothesis- I think that Viva/Kleenex will be the best at absorbing most of the liquid because I think it’s the thickest paper towel and I think that it can hold a fair amount of liquid that it requires.

Equipment- • Different types of paper towels- To test out which paper towel absorbs most liquids in the experiment. 1. Home Brand Coles 2. Viva/Kleenex 3. Handee Ultra • Different types of liquids- To use to test the paper towels with. 1. Orange Sunkist 2. Coke 3. Schweppes Raspberry • Stopwatch – To time the 30 seconds • Tape measurer or ruler – To measure the amount of liquid that has been absorbed onto the kitchen paper. • Sticky Tape – To tape the paper towels to A4 Paper after they have been used in the experiment. • 3 cups – To pour the liquids into. • A4 Paper - To put the kitchen paper towels onto. • Pen - To label the 3 cm and to gather results. • Camera – To take a photo of the paper towels.

Risk Assessment Table-

|Item |Risk |Justification |
|A4 Paper |First Aid Needed (6) |Paper Cut |
|Cup(s) |First Aid Needed (4) |Could cut yourself if some sharp edges |
| | |appear or either if the cup smashes. |

Procedure- 1. Grab 3 cups that are the exact same length, width and is the exact same size. 2. Pour into the 1st cup

Rembac states that paper towels are porous and permeable, which means they have small spaces that liquid and air can pass through, and liquid is able to rise through a property of water called cohesion. In this paper towel experiment, Rembac will be testing which brand of paper towel has the highest rate of capillarity, or ability to absorb water into its many spaces. Rembac`s procedure cut out 3x8 inches of each different brands of paper towel and observe any differences in the paper towels and take note. Then she fills each beaker half was and dips the strips of paper towels about an inch in the water and uses a marker to see how far up the water was absorbed on the strip, and repeats 4 to 6 times with each brand. (Rembac,…

In the investigation 1.2, we tested 3 demonstrations. And in the second demonstration In demonstration 2 the cup was put into the water, upside down, the beaker overflowed, and the paper towel that was inside of if did not get wet because the air was already taking up the space in the cup, therefore the water couldn't go inside the same space. In demonstration 1 the cup was placed in the water right side…

Scientists are doing research about using enormous sponges as a way to clean spills, and scientists can learn which material is best for optimal soak-up. A problem faced in the experiment was drops of oil falling down onto the rocks. The drops were very few, but could be avoided if a tarp or something like it were placed under the bucket of oil. Also, not quite all the oil could get out of the sponge. A couple drips refused to come out. This could be avoided by measuring the amount of oil left in the container, and have a different container for each trial.…

There are many different brands of paper towels available to consumers, all of which claim to be the most absorbent. How do we determine which paper towel is the most absorbent? The absorbency of a paper towel can be measured by the volume of liquid it can absorb. We are going to conduct an experiment that test the absorbency of two brands, one national brand Viva and a store brand Kroger by measuring the amount of water that each can absorb. We will answer the question: Which paper towel is more absorbent Viva or Kroger Value (store brand)?…

Blood is mostly water, therefore the physical properties of water, its cohesion, adhesion, and high surface tension, affect the patterns blood makes when it spatters. This lab activity reinforces some of these important physical properties. It could be conducted as a deductive activity in which students are asked to explain the results of the various experiments in terms of water’s physical properties. It could follow, for example, a lab activity where students compare the properties (drop size, evaporation rate) of three different liquids and then precede, for example, a discussion of the differences in composition and physical properties between blood and water.…

Paper towels are made from softwood trees which contain long fibers. The tree goes thru several processes before it is actually turned into a paper towel. The paper towel is made from pulp in which the water is removed and the fibers then bond into sheets. Also, resin is added to the process to give the paper towel strength (Union). Several layers are then put together with adhesive and then formed into a paper towel (Choudhury). Some paper towels are embossed to form air pockets which help to absorb more liquid and help to add more strength (Union).…

A paper towel which can also be known as kitchen paper is an absorbent towel made up of cellulose fibers, which also make up other plants like cotton and wood instead of cloth material. Although paper towels cannot be washed and used again, paper towels are disposable. The key to why paper towels soak up water is the cellulose fibers. Cellulose fibers are giant molecules which are made up of smaller molecules called sugar molecules (inedible) joined together. The liquid grips onto the cellulose fibers, absorbing liquid spills effectively and easily like dissolving sugar into water. This process is called the capillary action, occasionally referred to as surface tension. The capillary action is the rising/absorption of liquid through small gaps…

For durability, I hypothesized: If the material of the paper towel affects the durability of the towel, then the weaker material will not be as strong. I said this because cheaper toilet paper, suggests poorer quality, meaning that the materials won’t be as strong or durable as another, more expensive one.…
