Same sex marriage is already taboo, but same sex couples raising children is mostly not considered acceptable by the public because of the misconception that they are not qualified to bring up children in accordance with proper social values. The public is not certain if children will receive proper education about society and behavior to fit in as responsible members. However, several recent movements, such as Feminism and Post-modernism, argue about equal rights for everybody. Feminism is mainly concerned about the equality of men and women in society while Post-modernism is mainly concerned with ending all forms of discrimination in society. Feminism is actually a subdivision of Post-modernism because Post-modernism is against all discriminations while Feminism specializes in pointing out women's rights in the society and the equal status of women and men. Among other things, both ideologies re-evaluate the meaning of love and marriage in modern society. Besides the social movements, several scientific research was made regarding children who grow up in same sex marriages. Children raised in a same sex marriage share the same core values with the society, maybe even higher because they never learned about sexual discrimination in their home, and the only reason why they are restrained is because of the public opinion on these situations. In accordance with scientific research, the American Psychological Association (APA) claims that there are should be no concerns with same sex marriages. It is not just a violation of privacy and an act of discrimination against other people, but there are also no scientific basis which prove that it contributes to an improper development of children. Fears about children of lesbian or gay parents being sexually abused by adults, ostracized by peers, or isolated in single-sex lesbian or gay communities have received no scientific support. Overall, results of research suggest that the development, adjustment, and well-being of children with lesbian and gay parents do not differ markedly from that of children with heterosexual parents. (Association of American Psychologists [APA], 2004) In fact, social prejudice remains the only reason the public is against same sex couples and their rights to adopt children. There are several reports which claim that there is no difference and children raised in same sex marriages develop the same cognitive abilities and responsible social behavior as children in regular marriages. “Children raised by same-sex couples appear to do as well as those raised by parents of both sexes, suggests an international research review that challenges the long-ingrained belief that children need male and female parents for healthy adjustment” (Jayson, 2010). However, human beliefs are hard to change, and more scientific research is going to follow on this topic, the world is beginning to accept that marriage and love are not limited to a person's sexual orientation. In addition, there should be no discrimination of human sexuality in the world. According to the American Psychological Association, numerous research shows that most kids of same-sex households describe themselves as heterosexual in roughly the same proportion as conventional families. The association also says that homosexuality is not deviant behavior but a normal expression of human sexuality. (Blake, 2009) Although people often think homosexuality is a disorder, it is becoming recognized as a different expression of sexuality. In fact, it is more likely that a child will learn discriminative and negative facts about homosexuality in a heterosexual marriage. This does not have to be a general rule, but it is true that children raised by same sex couples often gain more tolerance and respect towards the equality of sexes. In addition, they can also become responsible and functional members of the society. There are many examples of people who were raised in a same sex marriage and carried on living...
