Raphael's "Madonna of the Meadows"
I chose to do my analysis on Raphaels "Madonna of the Meadows". In this painting my eye is first drawn to the Madonna, or the Virgin Mary. From Mary my eyes go to the baby that is sitting on the ground and then to the one standing with Marys help. I believe that this is done because Mary is the largest so my eyes go to her first. My eyes go next to the baby sitting because that is the way that Mary is looking. Next I am drawn to the second baby because the first is looking at him; finally my eye is drawn back to Mary mostly because of the staff or cross that the babies are holding.

The style of the painting is from the Renaissance so it comes into classical art. Also it can be viewed as humanism. I feel that it is humanism because it has to do with interests of people (religion) and also a philosophy (Christianity). The style of Raphael can be compared to the style of da Vinci and Michelangelo. Because the painting is part of the Renaissance time period the painting is representational. It represents Mary, John the Baptist and Jesus as Raphael saw them. Realism is the form of representational painting Madonna of the Meadows is considered. This is because I can tell that the forms are people and they look mostly real.

The painting is done in a two-dimensional surface. The perspective is atmospheric perspective. As I look at the painting, I see how the colors get duller and the objects get smaller. The painting is also one-point perspective. The vanishing point is near the center of the painting. This point makes me feel as if I am looking straight onto the scene.

Raphael does not make me aware of either surface or texture. Looking at the painting, I cannot tell anything of his strokes or what type of canvas he used. Also I do not feel that I am able to tell a light source. The light is just from the front and center. It seems like the light is from the center of the painting, where I seem to be sitting. I can tell this because the shadows are cast to the back of the painting. Another thing that Raphael does not use is illusion. Everything is what it seems and everything is real and there is no deception. Raphael seems to wants us to see what is there.

The type of balance is asymmetrical because both sides are not the same. There is a larger form that is more attractive and most likely heavier, but she is balanced by the two littler objects (the babies). Mary also has on more intense colors (red and blue) while the babies are in paler colors. Also the background is green and can balance a large blue form. Raphael uses every type of way to balance a asymmetrical painting according to our text book on page 77. He must have known his principles of design.

Raphaels Madonna of the Meadows is a very interesting painting. Without knowing who the Madonna is or who the babies are in the painting I feel it could be interpreted completely differently. Some person not knowing the name of the painting may just think that it is a women with her two children enjoying a day out in the field. From this point of view I feel like the two babies could be even fighting over the staff. I also think that the women could be soothing the naked baby while giving a stern look at the other.

Of course this point of view is not what Raphael wanted us to see. In fact, I feel that if Raphael even heard this take on his painting he might be appalled. Maybe that is why he named the painting what it is. The name gives us an idea on how Raphael wanted us to view the painting.

According to how Raphael wants us to see things, Madonna is the Virgin Mary. The naked baby is Jesus and the other baby is John the Baptist. John is passing his staff to Jesus because he is one person who help people know that Jesus was coming. The cross on the top of this staff is to symbolize the cross on which Jesus suffered.

Emotions seem to be running high in the painting, there is love from Mary to both of the babies. This is shown by how she looks at John and how gently she is holding Jesus. However, in Marys face I also see sadness. I feel this is because she knew what Jesus would have to suffer through. Raphael really makes me feel this emtions. This could be because I do believe in Jesus so it is easy for me to see all this.

I also find it interesting that Jesus is naked. I spent much time on thinking why. Finally, I think I may have figure it out. He is naked because he is pure, and clothing would only distract from that. Also, he is naked because that is how most babies where painted during the time period. The clothing of John is very interesting also. He is wearing the clothes he wore in the wild and as he was preaching about the coming of Jesus.

The colors Raphael used seem to sooth me. Also the way the people are painted does this to me. The rounded faces with the lighter colors makes me feel a bit calmer. This is what I feel he intended to do.

Raphael, like may other artists in the Renaissance, painted pictures of religious figures. This is not his only one of Mary and Jesus. I find this very interesting. Raphael may have felt very strongly about Mary and Jesus together. However, his paintings are of Jesus as a child. I was wondering why this was. I think it may be because we were all babies, so that is the easiest way for us to see Jesus. Plus Christmas is a very big holiday.

All in all, I feel that Raphaels Madonna of the Meadows is an amazing painting. It is one that speaks to me in many levels. Also from the point of view of an art critic, I feel that he has done so many things right to make the painting marvelous . Raphael followed most of the principles of design set in our book. This is a painting that I would love to have in my house and I hope many other feel the same way about it.

The lines in this work of art are of a large variety. On the right side of the painting a lot of the objects are horizontal. The woman though is sitting up vertically, along with the flame. There are a few diagonal lines also, for example; the position of the woman’s head, one of her legs, and her arm resting on the skull. Everything in this painting is realistic and the shapes are organic. The texture in this painting is two-dimensional. Almost all of the objects seem to be smooth, for example; the books, the wall, the table, the woman’s skin and dress, and so on. Warm colors are used in this painting. The value in this shows the lightest point being the center and from that going outward, it gets darker.…

Proportions and symmetry also apparent as we see in the flooring and overall layout particularly components of the linear perspective used by other artist’s during this time. One can also state there is a triangular convergence of the three adult figures placed within the frame. Moreover, in previous lessons realistic features and lifelike incorporation of art work has led many to reference humanism implying the stance emphasizing the modern interpretation of the human being. As stated earlier the shape and physical feature or either female or male are formulated in an obvious manor within Enthroned Madonna with Saints Liberale and Francis of Assisi.…

The main women in both paintings are in blue, the focal point in both paintings is drawing you to the center of the painting and bringing your eyes outward to view the rest. Great detail is given to each of the painting figures; you can notice the expression on the faces of those involved. In both works you can see the flow of movement, as if you can imagine where each hand will fall. Both paintings are two dimensional and done with oil paints. Both paintings are very northern Renaissance based, with the same characters in each picture, and the same clothing. In both paintings there is so much detail in the clothes and faces, it is almost life like, and everything flows very well. The figures in both paintings are centered in one small space, in “The Alba Madonna” the figures are centered and your eyes will go outward to the landscape and the details surrounding them and in “Deposition”, the focus is centered on Jesus and will go outward to catch the expressions of those around him, also both paintings are centered and in a pyramid like shape. In both paintings, even though it is at different time periods or ages in Jesus Christ’s life, the painting are depicting Jesus in Mary’s lap as in “The Alba Madonna”, and in “Deposition” being brought down from the cross to be place again…

From my perspective, but limited familiarity with works of art in general, the Raphael painting is significant in that it is considered a prime example of High Renaissance art and considered Raphael’s masterpiece. I believe it is also significant because as a component of the School of Athens (1509-1511) the painting over a period of 500 years continues to influence discussion and analysis among art historians and scholars.…

    1. formal and iconographic characteristics are seen in high renaissanace, venetian and mannerist paintings. to begin with, in high renaissance michaelangelos Moses is shown holding the 10 commandments. You can clearly see the anger that is dipicted through the facial expression on moses. Michaelangelo wonderfully portrays the psychological states in moses, through the iconographic characteristics of his puffed lower lip, arched toes and the bulging of his veins. the formal characteristics are seen through michealangeols mastery of lines, which help create the anger that is being felt by moses. The formal characteristic of the lining of his beard and clothing show his inner turmoil. In the venetian painting of the virgin of the rocks by Leonardo Da Vinci, the artist magnificantly uses the chiaroscuro method of light and dark to model the expression and emotional states of the figures being portrayed. The lines, soft and subtle give the painting a more intimate feeling. The figures are all shown interacting with one another, praying, pointing, and blessing. He also presents the figures in a pyramidal group and sharing the same environment. The figures emerge through the use of light and shading from the half-light of the cavernous visionary landscape. For mannerism, formal characteristics are clearly seen in Parmigianino's Madonna with the long neck. Although nothing is shown in proportion the painting still apears soft and smooth, through the lines and colors used. The madonnas long neck, the delicacy of her hands and swaying elongation of her frames are all signs of mannerism. On the left stands the angelic creatures melting with emotions as soft and smooth as their limbs. on the right the artist includes a line of columns without capitals and an enigmatic figure with a scroll whose distance from the foreground is immeasureable and imbiguous.…

In this painting, you see around 60 Greek philosophers arranged in a very large hall. The philosophers are talking to each other, discussing theories or mathematical queries. It symbolizes philosophic thinking and the search for truth. On the wall you can see paintings and statues. He has used contour lines with domes and actual line with figures. Personalities are arranged like actors in a tired architectural setting, Raphael has represented distinguished Greek philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle (the central figures) Socrates and Euclid. Composition has been ordered brilliantly, clearly revealing his outstanding ability. The placing of each figure and each group combine to produce perfect harmony, order and balance, and, even though some sixty figures are used in the composition, there is no crowding. Therefore painting is asymmetrical. The main focal point of the painting is on Plato and Aristotle. The painting has more emphasis on these two philosophers than the others because they are centered in the middle of the composition and they are the only two standing in front of hall entrance with sky surrounding them.…

One area where Renaissance artists expressed their interest in human nature was in paintings. First compare the picture of the Madonna with the Renaissance painting of the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci showed a woman as she really looked. He used shading, natural folds in clothing and human expression to paint a person. This is very different from Buoninsegna’s painting. He painted a statue. The face has few features, and is 2 dimensional. The child looks like a little man, and he uses religious symbols to portray emotion. Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa demonstrates the new Renaissance idea of human nature because it illustrated a shift from the use of symbolic representation to convey and idea to the use of human emotions or recognizable scenes. It also shifted focus from religious figures to the individual in a natural setting with greater realistic detail.…
