March 15, 2010 The anthropological question I wish to answer in my comparative media essay is “How is premarital sex viewed across cultures?” Through analysis of three different communities, the Taiwanese, the American Samoa, and the !Kung, I have come to the conclusion that views on premarital sex vary based on cultural definitions of marriage and sex. Different cultures define marriage and sex differently, and thus the views on premarital sex vary accordingly. In Nicole J. Grant’s “From Margaret Mead’s Field Notes: What Counted as ‘Sex’ in Samoa?”, the author supports Margaret Mead’s claims of sexual freedom for adolescent girls in Samoa. Grant argues that the key to understanding how adolescent girls in Samoa were sexually active yet not getting pregnant lies in the cultural definition of sex (Grant 1995: 679). Sex, in Samoa, is defined more in terms of oral and manual sex rather than sexual intercourse. Therefore it is possible for young girls to engage in “sex” (oral and manual) without getting pregnant. Negative sanctions are thus placed on intercourse, rather than premarital sex, as only intercourse can lead to pregnancy and illegitimacy. Boys are expected to engage in sexual intercourse only with menopausal women as those who impregnated girls are considered “very bad” (Grant 1995: 679). This expectation serves as an institutionalized protection of young girls from pregnancy (Grant 1995: 681). Another cultural norm serving as a protection against pregnancy is the masculinisation of non-procreative sex. The ability to engage in sexual relations with multiple partners without the result of procreation was valued by the Samoans as masculine behaviour. In order to be a masculine “adept lover” meant a man had to know how to have sex without intercourse (Grant 1995: 680). Instead, sexually monogamous relationships are viewed unfavourably as

    Marriage has been one of the most fundamental principals of human society since the beginning of time. Traditionally understood marriage is restricted to two people, particularly a women and a man. John Corvino rejects the view that homosexuality is immoral in his article, “Why Shouldn’t Tommy and Jim Have Sex? A Defense of Homosexuality.” He responds to two arguments against homosexual sex, that it is unnatural and harmful. Unnatural refers to that which deviates from the norm, from what most people do. Corvino distinguishes various senses of “unnatural” and his overall conclusion in this regard is that homosexual sex is not unnatural in any morally relevant sense. He defends the practice of homosexuality against the charge that is harmful. He takes issue both with the claim that the practice of homosexuality is harmful to those who engage in it and with the claim that others are threatened by it (Mappes). Many people believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman because that is the view installed throughout the Bible.     The idea of a woman having numerous sexual partners seems to be too abstract and farfetched for most of today’s modern world; in fact, female polygamy is found in less than 1% of the world´s cultures (McIntosh, Anth 1a lecture, 9/22/2010).     Sex, or the lack there of, will always be a topic among teens. Teens date, and teens have relationships. Most of these relationships will inevitably come to a point where one must chose whether to seize the moment and have sex with their partner, or they will set standards ahead of time saying they will not have sex until marriage. Every teen is either on one side of the fence or the other; they either will have premarital sex, or they will abstain. These two stances shed light on why sex is out of control today, what the world thinks about sex, and what religion says about sexual immorality. The facts are evident: teens have sex. It seems almost impossible to calculate the number of teens who are actually having premarital sex, because, of course, they don't wish to confess. Some teens though, have no choice but to confess because their actions lead to severe consequences such as pregnancy. Forty-three Percent of adolescent women become pregnant at least once before age 20 (Internet 1). That fact alone concludes that the choice of waiting for sex is in close running with the choice of not waiting. In the United States alone, more than 2,800 adolescents become pregnant each day. 1,300 of these girls give birth, 1,100 have abortions, and 400 have miscarriages (Internet 1). These astounding facts prove that sex may be considered out of control among teens today. In the olden days, around the Victorian period, sex was far from the topic that it is today. Also, during this time premarital sex was unthinkable. What happened between then and now that caused such an uproar? The world says that sex has become out of control because it was hushed for so long. But, for the last 20 years, sex has most defiantly not been hushed. If hushing up had been the cause of the trouble, ventilation would have set it right. But it has not (Lewis 92).
