Prejudice And Discrimination In Children: Social Research
Introduction This paper will discuss the social problem of prejudice and discrimination within children. I will also briefly go over research data found in various articles that discuss this social problem and the gaps in the literature. I will also discuss what further research I could do and develop a research question that a social psychologist might use to conduct research through a social lens perspective. Social psychology is defined as the scientific attempt to explain how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of other human beings (Fiske, 2014, p. 4).
Social Problem I have selected to discuss the social problem of prejudice and discrimination in children. As we know the social problem of prejudice and discrimination is taught throughout someone’s childhood and follows them through his or her adulthood. A prejudice individual may not follow up on their disposition. However, somebody can be prejudice towards a specific group however not be discriminatory to them. This article discussed research done with children in different age groups. The children were interviewed and white and black dolls were used as stimuli. The majority of statements made at each age level by both the black and the white children were meaningful, as opposed to irrelevant, and the black and white children at all age levels described both the black and white stimuli with responses that were preponderantly concrete, neutral in evaluative connotation, and no pejorative (Lerner & Buehrig, 1975 p. 47).     Discrimination and prejudice can have a generational impact on families and family members.     Elliot tells the dominant group of children that they are better, she praises them and provides them with benefits that the minority group is not allowed to partake in. She shows legislative controls in the forced segregation during recess, and by denying the minority group certain rights in the classroom.
