Abstract

Map making can be dated back to the Stone Age according to the Wikipedia encyclopedia. However, maps for planet were rare until the 1900s and start to bloom with the initiate of space age by scientists.

In this dissertation, planetary mapping would be introduced generally. The content of this dissertation is including the whole process of the mapping procedure, starting from data collection under certain referencing system to the end of the production of different types of planetary maps with various cartographic mapping techniques. A brief presentation on how the data are adjusted, extracted and processed would also be included. Although practical mapping experiments were not performed, samples figures would be supplemented in each section of process.

Acknowledgements
I would like to express my gratitude and sincere thanks to my supervisor, Dr. H. Bâki
Iz, the Associate Professor in Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics,
Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He suggested the topic and gave valuable comments throughout the project. An extensive freedom was allowed during the progress. This dissertation provided an opportunity for me to integrate the knowledge previously gained. Moreover, this furthers my study on the topic of planetary mapping. Besides, special thanks are given to all the people who have given me supports and encouragement throughout the project.
