Personal Narrative: My Most Proud Of Being Hispanic

I am extremely proud of being Hispanic. The traditions and values that the Hispanic community embodies will always be a part of who I am. The gratitude I feel for being Hispanic is indescribable. Being Hispanic and undocumented has taught me things that are essential to my identity. Having a father who works all day in order to provide for his family has shaped the way I view the world. Having a mother who stays up all night when I am sick has facilitated in me a passion for my family. Family and my own success are what drive me to excel in school. Love is another aspect of me that being Hispanic has taught me. As Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” That line from Dr. King stirs in me a love for humanity that I cannot describe. I grew up with an amazing family that provided me a childhood filled with immense joy. Unfortunately, in eight grade being undocumented was no longer a foreign phrase. I was told by my parents that I could anything that I dreamed of; however, I began to learn by myself that college, healthcare, and a driver’s licenses were things that I could never obtain. Eventually, I became depressed and started falling behind in school. My father caught onto my different behavior though. He told me again in a certain, passionate voice, “You can do anything that you dream of.” Afterwards, I became optimistic in an uncertain life. Fortunately, on June 15, 2015, I still remember the date, President Obama announced DACA for student like me. After that day, I became very passionate in my studies because I knew that I now had an
